Beetlejuice 2’s MPA Rating Is Harsher Than The 1988 Original

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” takes audiences on a trip back to Winter River with the Deetz family in tow. This installment features Lydia, her quirky artist mother Delia (played by Catherine O’Hara), and Lydia’s rebellious teenage daughter Astrid. Jenna Ortega, known for her role in Burton, Gough, and Millar’s series “Wednesday,” stars as Astrid. Warner Bros. is keen on attracting Ortega’s Gen-Z and younger fans, in addition to those who cherish the original 1980s film. The studio’s marketing efforts are balanced, showcasing both Michael Keaton’s antics with the original cast and Ortega’s angsty high school character entangled in her own afterlife adventure. Given this blend of elements, the film’s PG-13 rating is hardly surprising.

Recently, the MPA provided an official explanation for the film’s rating. They cited “violent content, macabre and bloody images, strong language, some suggestive material and brief drug use” as the reasons behind the PG-13 designation. This description is typical for Tim Burton, whose works frequently balance on the edge of whimsical and dark. While Burton occasionally ventures into purely adult themes, as seen in his adaptations of “Sleepy Hollow” and “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,” he also creates family-friendly films like “Corpse Bride” and “Frankenweenie.” His sweet spot, however, lies somewhere in-between, where he can explore his macabre tendencies without losing younger viewers. The new “Beetlejuice” movie seems to match the intensity of the original, giving fans hope that this film could recapture the magic.

The cast of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” includes Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Willem Dafoe, and Burn Gorman. The film is scheduled to rock your body and jump into theaters on September 6, 2024.
