‘Below Deck’ Crew Mourns Devastating Loss

One of the Below Deck crew members encountered heartbreaking news during Monday’s episode. Deckhand Nathan Gallagher was informed of his best friend’s passing while he was out at sea. Continue reading to understand how events unfolded.

Nathan Gallagher was heartbroken when he heard about his friend’s death while he was away at sea. The September 2 episode of Below Deck Mediterranean captured the entire ordeal.

In a confessional, Nathan recounted the moment he received the news. “So, I get this text saying that my friend has passed away from cancer. I knew he had cancer, but the night before I came to join the boat, we were out drinking. He wasn’t drinking but he seemed okay,” he said.

Nathan continued, “Thinking about the memories and things like that, it’s a lot of information to gather at once and I’m just pushing that aside for now.”

Fellow Deckhand Gael Cameron, who is involved in a “boatmance” with Nathan, noticed something was not right with him throughout the night. Finally, Nathan opened up to Gael and Chief Stew Aesha Scott.

“I don’t know why I’m so sensitive but I’m so sad,” Nathan expressed to Gael. She responded supportively, “Who cares if you’re sensitive, man? You’re going through s–t. It’s okay. You’re allowed to be sad sometimes.”

The Below Deck star shared that he was struggling to cope with the loss. He elaborated in a confessional about why the loss was particularly challenging for him.

“My mom was going through tests for cancer recently,” Nathan revealed. “She’s been cleared now, thankfully. I found out through my sister. My mom didn’t tell me directly. Grief and things like this isn’t something we talk about. I definitely tend to push people away. I’m doing what my mom does.”

The episode showcased Below Deck fan-favorite Chief Stew Aesha Scott talking with Nathan’s friends on board. She told Deckhand Joe Bradley that he needed to offer support to Nathan.

In a separate confessional, Joe admitted it must be tough for Nathan to endure such an experience. “Like, I couldn’t remotely imagine. He’s a brother to me at this point, so I’m gonna be there for Nathan,” he said. “Whatever he needs, we’ll get done. I want to show him that he’s got me.”

Gael also rallied around Nathan, drawing them closer together. She mentioned that it portrayed a different side of Nathan — one that is more sensitive than he often shows.

The Below Deck star stated, “I feel like Nathan was there for me when I was going through a tough time with my ex, and I just want him to know that I’m here for him too.”

Below Deck Mediterranean airs on Mondays at 9 p.m. EST on Bravo.
