Ben Burgess has officially released the demo version of “Whiskey Glasses,” the song that became a massive hit for Morgan Wallen in 2018 and reached even greater heights during the summer of 2019. Burgess, a former artist on Wallen’s current label, Big Loud, co-wrote the song with Kevin Kadish. Wallen went on to include it as the third single on his 2018 studio album, If I Know Me, which remains a favorite among many fans despite mixed opinions.

“Whiskey Glasses” achieved significant success, becoming a #1 hit on the U.S. Billboard Country Airplay chart in June 2019. It has since been certified 9× Platinum by the RIAA. The song is poised to join the elite club of country songs certified Diamond, signifying sales of over 10 million copies, which would make it only the ninth country song to achieve this milestone.

The song has maintained its popularity and still gets ample radio play. While Wallen had experienced some success with previous tracks like “Up Down,” “Whiskey Glasses” undeniably catapulted him into a new level of commercial triumph, setting the stage for his ongoing successful career.

For those unfamiliar, a demo is essentially a rough draft of a song, usually produced by the writers when the artist isn’t involved. It provides musicians and publishers with a sample to determine if they want to move forward with it. Interestingly, Burgess’s demo is not drastically different from Wallen’s final studio cut. The primary difference might be a slightly twangier production in the chorus, but the essence remains remarkably similar.

For music enthusiasts, it’s fascinating to hear the original version of a song that became such a monumental hit. The song was so pervasive in 2019 that it seemed like it was playing everywhere in Nashville over that summer. Listening to the demo, it’s clear why Wallen chose to record it, setting the stage for its massive success.
