Biden ‘devastated and outraged’ by Hersh Goldberg-Polin’s death in Gaza

President Joe Biden expressed his deep sorrow and anger over the death of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, an Israeli-American who was taken hostage by the militant group Hamas. In his statement, Biden shared the profound impact of this tragedy, highlighting Hersh’s bravery during the horrific events of October 7 that occurred at a music festival in Israel.

Biden described how Hersh lost his arm while trying to help those around him during the brutal attack. He was only 23 years old and had dreams of exploring the world, which were tragically cut short. “I am devastated and outraged,” Biden stated, emphasizing the innocence of those targeted in the attack.

The Israeli military recovered the bodies of Hersh and five other hostages over the weekend. Their deaths come amidst ongoing efforts by the U.S. and its allies to negotiate a cease-fire that would facilitate the release of hostages, a goal that remains elusive as no concrete agreements have been reached.

A White House official confirmed that Biden reached out to Hersh’s parents, Rachel Goldberg-Polin and Jon Polin, offering his condolences personally. The parents have been vocal advocates for a hostage release deal and have worked tirelessly to bring their son and others held in Gaza back home.

In a heartfelt statement, the family expressed their devastation at the loss of their “beloved son and brother” and thanked everyone who has supported them during this challenging time.

Biden acknowledged the strength of Hersh’s parents, who had previously shared their story at the Democratic National Convention last month. “I have gotten to know his parents, Jon and Rachel. They have been courageous, wise, and steadfast, even as they have endured the unimaginable,” the President remarked.

He continued to commend them as relentless advocates for their son and all the hostages held under dire conditions, expressing his admiration for their resilience. “I know all Americans tonight will have them in their prayers, just as Jill and I will,” he added.

With a heavy heart, Biden underscored the administration’s commitment to securing the release of the remaining hostages. “I have worked tirelessly to bring their beloved Hersh safely to them and am heartbroken by the news of his death. It is as tragic as it is reprehensible,” he stated, ensuring that the U.S. will continue to apply pressure on Hamas. “Make no mistake, Hamas leaders will pay for these crimes.”

National security adviser Jake Sullivan also engaged with families of other hostages on Sunday, delivering the news of Goldberg-Polin’s death. He discussed the administration’s ongoing efforts to secure a deal for the release of those still in captivity, reaffirming the U.S. commitment to addressing the complexities of the hostage crisis.

The ordeal surrounding the hostages has garnered significant attention, reflecting the emotional toll on the families involved and the broader implications for U.S.-Israeli relations and Middle East stability. The Biden administration faces mounting pressure as it seeks effective solutions to navigate the volatile dynamics of the region.

As the situation evolves, the focus remains on the humanitarian aspect, with many calling for urgent action to protect innocent lives and seek justice. The lives impacted by these tragic events serve as a painful reminder of the myriad challenges faced in achieving peace and safety.

With every effort to secure the release of the hostages, the sentiments of loss and hope continue to resonate throughout the American and Israeli communities. The resilience demonstrated by families like the Goldbergs stands as a testament to the enduring spirit in times of unimaginable sorrow.
