Biden’s Speech Highlights DNC Day 1: Check Today’s Full Agenda.

DNC to honor Biden, lay out Harris agenda, party future 03:28

Washington — The Democratic National Convention is set to begin on Monday in Chicago, where the focus will be on solidifying support for the new presidential ticket. Following Vice President Kamala Harris’s official nomination earlier this month, the party gears up for a significant gathering at the United Center and McCormick Place.

The convention comes only weeks after President Biden’s announcement regarding his decision to step aside, which created a shift in the presidential landscape. Delegates from across the nation will converge to ceremonially endorse Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. President Biden is scheduled to address the convention on the opening night.

Harris’s nomination was overwhelmingly supported during a virtual roll call earlier this month. Following this process, Democratic National Committee (DNC) leaders certified her nomination alongside Walz’s as part of the party’s official ticket.

Convention chair Minyon Moore expressed enthusiasm about this milestone, stating, “Now the eyes of the world turn to Chicago, where our delegates will celebrate this historic ticket.” She emphasized the importance of sharing the individual stories of Harris, Walz, and the Democratic Party as they gear up for a challenging campaign against Donald Trump.

This newly formed ticket will utilize the convention to enhance their introductions within the party, preparing for the upcoming election in less than three months. Walz is expected to formally accept his nomination for vice president on Wednesday night, while Harris is slated to take the stage on Thursday to accept her presidential nomination.

Each day of the convention will have a focus reflecting the theme “For the People, For Our Future.” The initial theme for Monday is geared towards “For the People,” where the party aims to highlight their priorities and achievements during the Biden-Harris administration while contrasting them with Trump’s record.

Biden’s tenure and years of political experience will feature prominently in Monday’s discussions. The celebration of the president’s contributions will go hand-in-hand with the party’s new direction under Harris’s leadership.

Anita Dunn, a former senior adviser to Biden, noted his commitment to the campaign is strong. She stated that Biden is viewing his role as “volunteer-in-chief,” focused on ensuring a Democratic victory in November.

Dunn remarked, “What we have today is a unified, excited party, recognizing the difficulties ahead but motivated to work hard to secure a win.”

The convention programming will run from 6:15 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET on the opening day, culminating in the ceremonial roll call scheduled for Tuesday, where delegates nationwide will gather to officially nominate Harris.

Although the official speaking schedule remains under wraps, several prominent figures have been confirmed to speak on the convention’s first day. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is among those set to address the audience, alongside First Lady Jill Biden and President Biden, who will deliver the keynote address for the evening. Additionally, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the 2016 Democratic nominee, is also expected to speak on Monday night.

The convention and its keynote speeches will be available for viewing on various platforms, ensuring broad access to the event’s developments.
