Big Changes Coming Soon for Michigan Netflix Users

Usually, when Netflix announces a major change, subscribers hope it’s for the addition of a great new show. However, more often than not, such announcements signal either a hike in prices or the introduction of advertisements.

Unfortunately, the latest update from Netflix fits into the latter category, although the prices won’t technically be increasing. Instead, for viewers across the country, including Michigan, it’ll now cost more to watch content without ads.

Last year, Netflix revealed its plan to phase out the cheapest ad-free subscription, priced at $11.99 per month. This plan offered users a middle ground between watching content with ad interruptions and a completely ad-free, seamless viewing experience.

Regrettably, users won’t be able to keep the $11.99 plan once it’s removed from their accounts. There won’t be any “grandfathered” subscriptions to save money or skip ads. Subscribers will have to choose either to switch to the cheapest plan with ads or opt for a higher-priced ad-free plan.

A Reddit post in the subreddit /r/mildlyinfuriating brought attention to the fact that this change is beginning to roll out. It seems that, based on the subscription price mentioned, the original poster (OP) was in Canada. Canada and the UK were expected to experience these changes first.

Michigan viewers subscribed to the original Basic plan can expect to receive a similar notification soon.

The revised subscription plans are as follows:

  • The “New” Basic (Standard With Ads) Plan: $6.99 per month for ad-supported, HD viewing on one device.
  • The Standard Plan: $15.49 per month for ad-free, HD viewing on two devices.
  • The Premium Plan: $22.99 per month for ad-free, Ultra HD viewing on up to six devices simultaneously.

Both the Standard and Premium plans allow users to share their accounts with individuals outside their households for an additional fee of $7.99. However, the Standard plan permits only one extra member.

If you were to set up a new Netflix account today, these are the only available options, as the $11.99 plan has already been removed for new subscribers.
