Big Changes Could Be Coming Soon for Netflix Users in Michigan

Usually, when Netflix makes a significant change, viewers hope it’s because an exciting new show is coming. However, over the years, we’ve learned that such changes often mean increased prices or the introduction of advertisements.

Unfortunately, the latest change falls into the latter category, though prices, technically, will not increase. For viewers across the country, including in Michigan, it has become more expensive to watch Netflix without ads.

Last year, Netflix announced that it would soon phase out its cheapest ad-free subscription option, which cost $11.99 per month. This plan acted as a middle ground between enduring advertisements and enjoying an uninterrupted viewing experience.

Sadly, the change means subscribers will not be able to keep the package once Netflix removes it from their account. This means there are no legacy or grandfathered subscriptions that could save viewers a few dollars and a few minutes per show. Subscribers will need to switch to the cheapest plan with ads or upgrade to a more expensive plan to avoid commercials.

A Reddit post in the /r/mildlyinfuriating community hinted that the change was starting to roll out. It appears that the original poster (OP) was based in Canada, given their subscription price. Canada and the UK were anticipated to experience the change first.

Michigan viewers can expect to receive a similar notification soon if they are subscribed to the original Basic plan.

The updated subscription options are now as follows:

  • The “New” Basic (Standard With Ads) Plan at $6.99 per month for ad-supported viewing in HD on one device
  • The Standard Plan at $15.49 per month for ad-free viewing in HD on two devices
  • The Premium Plan at $22.99 per month for ad-free viewing in Ultra HD on up to six devices simultaneously

The Standard and Premium plans allow account sharing with individuals who do not live in the same household for an additional fee of $7.99. However, the Standard plan permits only one extra member slot.

New Netflix subscribers will only have these options available, as the $11.99 option has already been removed for new accounts.
