Big Sean Uplifts, A$AP Rocky Surprises, Ice Spice Keeps It Raw, and More

Today is Friday, which means there are a plethora of new Hip-Hop releases to look forward to. To help you unwind and enjoy the weekend, here are VIBE’s picks of songs and albums you should definitely add to your weekend playlist.

Big Sean’s “On Up” plays like an early ’90s or 2000s record and finally hits the mark. The song, dedicated to his son, teaches him about resilience and making the right business moves. The positivity shines through, reminiscent of an early Big Sean track. He adds to this inspirational tone by featuring a gospel choir and soul claps. As a seasoned artist, Big Sean is in a peaceful phase, adding warmth and tenderness to this memorable track.

A$AP Rocky’s “Highjack” featuring Jessica Pratt may fall a bit flat for some listeners. His rapping style remains unchanged, and lyrically, he does not offer much new. The diss aimed at either Drake or Travis Scott feels redundant considering his current personal circumstances. Despite this, the production is immersive, though Rocky doesn’t do much to elevate it, making “Highjack” better suited for background music.

Just a week after dropping her debut album Y2K!, Ice Spice releases a bonus track titled “GYAT.” This song stands out with its Jersey club energy and is arguably better than any tracks on her album. Despite a clash between the loud production and her lower vocals, Ice Spice completely shines on this beat. While the song could have been longer or featured another artist, it still proves to be highly enjoyable.

Killer Mike’s latest project, Songs For Sinners And Saints, marks a significant evolution in his discography. The album opens strong with “Bussing Bricks Intro,” setting the tone with raw themes and asserting his street credentials. The standout track “Nobody Knows” featuring Anthony Hamilton captures the album’s depth, blending soulful vocals with incisive rhymes. Tracks like “Higher Level” and “Summer 4 Junkies” highlight Mike’s solo prowess, while collaborations such as “Exit 9 (Scenic Route)” featuring Offset and Blxst further elevate the album. “Still Talk’n That Sh*t,” featuring Key Glock and Project Pat, closes the album with a strong Memphis flavor, making it a must-listen for both long-time fans and newcomers.

Mike WiLL Made-It collaborates with Lil Yachty and Lil Wayne for the track “high3r,” the lead single from his upcoming album, R3SET. A departure from his usual style, the song features a slow rolling instrumental with pounding percussion and bass. Lil Yachty opens with a poignant hook, while Lil Wayne contributes witty couplets, both adding depth to the track.

NAV partners with Cash Cobain and Bay Swag on “6AM Thoughts,” diving into a sensual, downtempo track. Reflecting on temptations and setting boundaries, the trio seamlessly meshes autotune croons to convey their message. Cash and Bay use a dynamic 1-2 punch style for their verse, while NAV holds his own, making this a great track to set the mood.

Boldy James and Tee Grizzley’s “Cecil Fielder” pays homage to the legendary Tigers first baseman. Produced by Harry Fraud, the track begins strong with Boldy’s steely hook and verse, followed by Tee Grizzley’s effective contribution. The track arrives with news of a collaborative album, The Bricktionary, adding more excitement for fans.

Sixsaidit’s Black Widow three-pack shows her versatility. “Hi My Name Is” reintroduces the artist, while “Sweat” brings infectious dance-ready energy. “Sorry” wraps it up with ironic apologies for past enchantments, creating a whirlwind experience in under five minutes.

9lives collaborates with Kanii and Anycia on “I Did That.” The record combines 9lives’ melodic sense with Anycia’s gruff drawl effectively. The song’s creation was a meaningful one, involving live interaction with fans during its production, making it a special moment for all involved.

Tay B teams up with Lil Baby on “ALL TEN”. Produced by Teej and Gotica, this track features confident bars from both artists. A music video accompanies the song, boasting cameos from Detroit rap stars like Tee Grizzley and 42 Dugg. This track precedes Tay B’s upcoming solo album, which Lil Baby will executive produce.

Wiz Khalifa has released Wiz Owens, and Soulja Boy brings us Swag Season, ensuring there’s something for everyone this weekend. If you like your music fresh and powerful, Wiz and Soulja have you covered.

Doechii makes an impression with “NISSAN ALTIMA,” while JPEGMAFIA’s new offering, I Lay Down My Life for You, promises another round of his signature intensity. Philthy Rich’s My Block: Welcome to Sem City 3, Q Da Fool’s King George, and Sugarhill Ddot’s 2 Sides Of The Story add even more variety to your listening options.

Emilio Rojas rounds it all off with It Always Gets Better, an album promising hopeful tracks and strong messages.
