Black Midi’s Geordie Greep Speaks Out

British experimental rock band Black Midi has decided to part ways. Frontman Geordie Greep confirmed the band’s “indefinite” end when fans inquired about new music, following the second anniversary of their 2022 album, “Hellfire.”

Greep made the announcement during an Instagram Live session on August 10, where he stated, “no more black midi” and “it’s over.” He followed up by describing Black Midi as “an interesting band that’s now indefinitely over.”

Initially, fans questioned the authenticity of Greep’s comments. However, Black Midi bassist Cameron Picton seemed to confirm the disbandment when he addressed Greep’s statement on X the next day.

“We’d agreed not to say anything about ‘breaking up,’ so I was as blindsided as everyone else last night but maybe in a different way. I guess sometimes all you can say is lol,” Picton wrote in a since-deleted post, which was shared on Reddit by fans. He added, “Anyway! Starting sessions for my own record soon, looking forward – should be good, hopefully great!”

Black Midi was formed in 2017 and originally consisted of Geordie Greep, Cameron Picton, drummer Morgan Simpson, and guitarist Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin. They played their first gig at Brixton’s The Windmill in June of that year. The band soon established a residency at the venue and released their debut single, “bmbmbm,” in 2018, earning recognition as “the best band in London” by Shame.

Their debut album, “Schlagenheim,” was released in 2019 and was followed by “The Black Midi Anthology Vol. 1: Tales of Suspense and Revenge” in 2020, a mix of jam sessions and spoken word. In 2021, they launched their album “Cavalcade,” followed by their most recent release, “Hellfire,” in 2022. “Hellfire” achieved their highest chart placement in the UK, reaching No. 22, and it also marked their first appearance on the U.S. charts, peaking at No. 139.

As of now, the band has not provided additional details regarding their “indefinite” separation. While Picton hinted at working on new music, Greep is also moving forward with his career. The frontman has been performing solo shows and is set to debut in the U.S. with the Swing Boys next month, according to Stereogum.
