Blake Lively on the Iconic Rooftop Scene from ‘It Ends With Us’ by Ryan Reynolds

Blake Lively, known for her roles both onscreen and behind the scenes, has revealed that her husband, Ryan Reynolds, played a surprising role in the adaptation of Coleen Hoover’s novel It Ends With Us. The actress and executive producer shared that Reynolds contributed to the dialogue in a significant rooftop scene.

Speaking with E! News on August 6, Lively disclosed, “The iconic rooftop scene, my husband actually wrote it. Nobody knows that but you now.” This revelation even caught the film’s screenwriter, Christy Hall, by surprise.

Lively and Reynolds have a history of collaborating on each other’s projects. Recently, Lively made a cameo appearance in Reynolds’s film Deadpool & Wolverine as Lady Deadpool. “We help each other,” said Lively. “He works on everything I do. I work on everything he does. So his wins, his celebrations are mine, and mine are his.”

Hall explained to People in an interview that it wasn’t initially clear who contributed certain lines in the final cut of the rooftop scene. “There were a couple of little things that I thought had been improvised. Like when he says, ‘Pretty please with a cherry on top,’ and she talks about the maraschino cherries. When I saw a cut I was like, ‘Oh, that’s cute. That must have been a cute improvised thing.’ So if I’m being told that Ryan wrote that, then great, how wonderful.”

Elaborating on the editing process, Hall noted she had noticed a “few little flourishes” that she didn’t recall writing herself. “But, again, like I said, the moments that I felt like needed to be honored are there,” she added. “So I recognize the scene and I’m proud of the scene. And if those flourishes came from Ryan, I think that’s wonderful.”
