Blue Lock Unveils Unexpected Hiatus

It’s hard to deny that Blue Lock has become not only one of the biggest sports anime in recent memory but one of the biggest anime adaptations overall. In 2023, the manga became the highest-selling publication in Japan, proving the soccer anime has significant popularity. As fans eagerly await the second season this fall, the manga remains strong with new chapters regularly released. However, Blue Lock fans will have to wait a little longer for the next chapter.

Blue Lock might be gearing up for its second season in October, but 2024 has already been a landmark year for the sports anime franchise. Debuting in theaters across Japan and North America, the series released its first movie, Blue Lock: Episode Nagi. This film, focusing on another main character involved in the “Blue Lock experiment,” achieved box office success worldwide, highlighting anime’s growing popularity.

Weekly Shonen Magazine announced that Blue Lock creator Nomura Yuusuke would take a one-week break from the series due to health issues. This brief hiatus will delay the next chapter for just one week; the manga is expected to resume on August 28th. With no end in sight for the manga, the anime adaptation still has ample content to cover in its second season and beyond.

For those who haven’t caught up on Blue Lock, the first season is available for streaming on Crunchyroll. The streaming service describes the anime as follows: “After a disastrous defeat at the 2018 World Cup, Japan’s team struggles to regroup. But what’s missing? An absolute ace striker. The Football Union is determined to create a striker who hungers for goals and thirsts for victory, so Blue Lock — a rigorous training ground for 300 of Japan’s best and brightest youth players — is created. To survive this battle royale, the last striker standing will have to out-muscle and out-ego everyone who stands in his way!”
