BMW Recalls Over 720,000 Cars Due to Electric Water Pump Problem

BMW announced on Tuesday a significant recall affecting 720,796 vehicles across North America due to concerns regarding their electric water pumps. These pumps may short circuit due to improper installation, which poses a potential fire hazard.

The recall was documented by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which outlined that an “improperly sealed electrical connector on the water pump may be exposed to water and short circuit.” This issue arises because “blowby-liquid from the positive crankcase ventilation system may collect on the intake air hose,” leading to possible dripping onto the plug connector. This could eventually seep in and result in an electrical shortage.

The recall specifically pertains to several BMW models ranging from years 2012 to 2018. The comprehensive list includes:

  • BMW 228i (2014-2016)
  • BMW 228xi (2014-2016)
  • BMW 328i (2012-2016)
  • BMW 328xi (2012-2016)
  • BMW 428i (2014-2016)
  • BMW 428xi (2015-2016)
  • BMW 528i (2012-2016)
  • BMW X1 (2012-2015)
  • BMW X3 (2013-2017)
  • BMW X4 (2015-2018)
  • BMW X5 (2016-2018)
  • BMW Z4 (2012-2016)

As a corrective measure, BMW will replace the affected water pumps and plug connectors at no cost to vehicle owners. The company will also install a protective shield to mitigate future risks. Notification letters detailing the recall will begin shipping to affected owners on October 4.

Customers with questions can reach out to BMW’s customer service at 1-800-525-7417. The recall is identified by BMW as “24V-608.” Additionally, vehicle owners can contact NHTSA’s safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit the NHTSA website for further assistance.

Since the onset of this month, BMW has received approximately 18 customer complaints linked to the faulty water pumps. However, the company has confirmed that no accidents or injuries related to this specific recall have been reported.

Notably, this recall represents the third such action taken by BMW since July. On July 24, the automaker recalled over 290,000 vehicles due to faulty bolts that could result in the interior cargo rail detaching in the event of a rear-end collision.

Earlier on July 10, BMW also issued a recall for more than 394,000 vehicles in North America due to concerns related to Takata airbag inflators. These inflators posed a risk of exploding upon deployment in a crash, potentially injuring occupants with sharp metal fragments.

BMW’s proactive measures in addressing these defects and the extensive recall effort underscore the company’s commitment to ensuring the safety of its vehicles. As vehicle safety remains a paramount concern, the ongoing communication with affected owners will help reinforce public confidence in the brand.
