Bob Dylan Releases 27-Disc, 431-Track Live Box Set of 1974 Shows With The Band

Legendary musician Bob Dylan is set to revisit one of the most enthralling phases of his live performance career with a comprehensive 27-disc collection. This collection will chronicle his iconic 1974 tour in which The Band served as his backing group.

Bob Dylan – The 1974 Live Recordings is scheduled to be released by Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings on September 20. The extensive set features a staggering 431 tracks, out of which 417 are previously unreleased performances. Fans got a first glimpse on July 9 with a never-released version of “Forever Young” recorded in Seattle on February 9, 1974.

This release celebrates the 50th anniversary of Dylan’s return to touring, following an eight-year hiatus prompted by a motorcycle accident in 1966. The 1974 tour marked Dylan’s first in eight years and produced the live double album Before the Flood.

Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, and Richard Manuel re-joined Dylan in 1974 after initially backing him in his pioneering electric tour of 1966. The North American tour, which covered 40 cities and saw the band performing 30 shows in 42 days, commenced on January 3 in Chicago. The tour established several live concert traditions, such as the pre-cellphone era ritual of fans lighting up with lighters and the sudden illumination of house lights during key moments.

During this tour, Dylan and The Band performed several iconic tracks for the first time. These included “All Along the Watchtower,” “Forever Young,” and “Most Likely You Go Your Way (and I’ll Go Mine).” They also showcased rarities like “Ballad of Hollis Brown,” “Song to Woody,” and “Nobody ‘Cept You.”

The box set will contain 133 recordings newly mixed from 16-track tape and every surviving soundboard recording from the tour. The set will also feature new liner notes by journalist/critic Elizabeth Nelson.

Complementing the box set, a three-LP colored vinyl highlights release, The 1974 Live Recordings – The Missing Songs From Before The Flood, will be issued by Third Man Records. This collection will include versions of every song from the 1974 tour that did not make it to the original Before the Flood album.

Dylan, who is now 83 years old, continues to tour as part of his “Never Ending Tour.” His next performance is scheduled for July 29 at the North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre in Chula Vista, CA.
