On Monday, Bosch creator Michael Connelly shared on Instagram that filming for the new series has started. “Ballard is filming! With Maggie Q as Renée. I’m super excited! – MC.”

Connelly also posted a photo featuring himself, Mitzi Roberts, who inspired the character Renée Ballard, Maggie Q, and director Jet Wilkinson. The caption read, “Mitzi Roberts, the real-life inspiration for Renée Ballard, the amazing Maggie Q who IS Renée Ballard, and our fabulous director Jet Wilkinson. Day one! Shooting on Venice Beach.”

Mitzi Roberts is a real-life LAPD detective who debuted in Connelly’s novel The Late Show and has since appeared in five more books.

Australian-born director Jet Wilkinson brings a wealth of experience to the project, having directed episodes of Bosch: Legacy and Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Renée Ballard, the protagonist of the spinoff, has a compelling backstory. After a difficult childhood—losing her father as a teen and being abandoned by her mother—she was homeless until her grandmother took her in. Ballard studied journalism at the University of Hawaii but realized her passion lay in solving crimes.

The LAPD eventually hires her to head its new cold case division, an underfunded, all-volunteer unit facing the city’s largest caseload. Connelly explained, “Ballard approaches these frozen-in-time cases with empathy and determination. When she uncovers a larger conspiracy during her investigations, she’ll lean on the assistance of her retired ally, Harry Bosch, to navigate the dangers that threaten both her unit and her life.”

Maggie Q stars as Renée Ballard, with Courtney Taylor playing Samira Parker, “a wary, impulsive tough woman with a burning desire for justice,” according to Deadline. Samira, inspired by her grandfather to become a cop, finds the job isn’t what she expected.

Although it is widely expected that Titus Welliver will reprise his role as Harry Bosch, no official announcement has been made.

When asked about the premiere date, Michael Connelly responded, “2025.” This gives fans plenty to look forward to as the production continues.

So, Bosch enthusiasts, are you excited for this new spinoff?
