Box Office: ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Scores Big in Second Weekend

Marvel’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” has continued its impressive run at the box office, garnering $97 million during its second weekend of release. This makes it the second-biggest movie of the year, trailing only behind “Inside Out 2.”

Starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, the comic book sequel had already set a new record for the largest domestic opening for an R-rated movie, raking in $205 million during its first weekend, according to Comscore estimates.

The film secured the eighth spot for the largest second-weekend opening in domestic box office history, surpassing last summer’s blockbuster “Barbie,” which made $93 million in its second weekend, as reported by Variety.

Amid discussions of superhero fatigue, “Deadpool & Wolverine” has breathed new life into the genre. Domestically, it has grossed $395 million, surpassing the combined earnings of the first two “Deadpool” movies. It is widely anticipated to cross the $1 billion mark in the coming days. In the span of eight weekends, “Inside Out 2” has amassed over $1.55 billion worldwide.

In second place domestically, “Twisters,” Universal’s reimagining of the 1996 blockbuster, starring Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Anthony Ramos, earned $22 million during its third weekend, totaling $195 million to date.

M. Night Shyamalan’s new thriller “Trap” opened in third place, generating $15 million, despite not being screened for critics. Meanwhile, Sony’s “Harold and the Purple Crayon,” adapted from the popular children’s book, earned a lackluster $6 million, placing it in sixth position.

In a broader context, Walt Disney Studios achieved a milestone, becoming the first studio to surpass $3 billion in global ticket sales within a single year. This success was buoyed by 2024 releases like “Inside Out 2,” “Deadpool & Wolverine,” “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” and “The First Omen.”

The overall box office had its strongest week of the year so far, with a robust $418 million. According to Comscore analysis, July alone brought in $1.2 billion in domestic revenue, marking the first billion-dollar-plus month since July 2023.
