Brett Favre to Honor Toby Keith in NBC’s Two-Hour Country Tribute Special

Brett Favre joins an impressive lineup of country music stars to pay tribute to Toby Keith in a new TV special.

“Toby Keith: American Icon” airs at 8 p.m. Wednesday on NBC. The two-hour program was filmed on July 29 at a sold-out Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee, to honor Keith, who passed away on February 5 from stomach cancer at the age of 62.

The evening includes performances of some of Keith’s 42 Top 10 hits by artists such as Carrie Underwood, Eric Church, Lainey Wilson, Ashley McBryde, Brantley Gilbert, Hardy, Darius Rucker, Jordan Davis, and Jelly Roll. Keith’s daughter, Krystal Keith, will also perform “Don’t Let the Old Man In.” Additionally, celebrity guests including Stephen Colbert, Carrot Top, and Sammy Hagar will share stories about Keith.

Favre’s friendship with Keith traces back to the 1990s when Favre was the quarterback for the Green Bay Packers and Keith frequently toured in northeast Wisconsin. Keith’s popularity in Green Bay often led to sold-out shows, including back-to-back performances at the Resch Center.

Keith sometimes wore a No. 4 Packers jersey onstage during his Green Bay shows, and Favre was a regular attendee. “It seems like every show I’ve done in Green Bay, he’s been there,” Keith mentioned in a 2017 interview with the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

Last week, Favre shared a photo of the two on a golf course, accompanied by a heartfelt message: “Toby Keith was one of a kind. He worked as hard as anybody and had a great time every time we got together. You just never know when it’s your time to go. Make sure to tell your loved ones that you care about them.”

In an interview with TMZ Sports in February, Favre recalled partnering with Keith, professional golfers Andy North, and Jack Nicklaus for a pro-am tournament in Madison a few years ago. Favre described the experience as “above the bucket list.” “I couldn’t tell you if (Keith) hit a good or bad shot, but he was a lot of fun to play with,” Favre shared. “Toby was just … he was an entertainer. He was the best.”

“Toby Keith: American Icon” will be available for streaming on Peacock starting Thursday.
