Brian Volk-Weiss Hints at New RoboForce Release

RoboForce, the 1980s toy line recently acquired by Nacelle and turned into a new animated series, is set to debut sooner than anticipated. In a recent conversation with ComicBook at Comic Con International in San Diego, Nacelle’s Brian Volk-Weiss shared that the plan is to release the series in the next few months, aiming for a 2024 debut, though he couldn’t confirm the exact date.

Originally created in 1984 by Ruby-Spears, RoboForce was intended to become a multimedia franchise that could help boost toy sales, similar to the strategy behind shows like GI Joe and Transformers. However, the initial project yielded just one movie, Robo Force: The Revenge of Nazgar, which didn’t gain much traction. The movie is challenging to find, only officially available as a bonus feature on the Challenge of the Go-Bots vol. 2 DVD from Warner Archive.

During a discussion with Chris Killian, Volk-Weiss mentioned he couldn’t disclose the exact release date but noted it is “highly likely” that it will happen this year.

To celebrate the fifth anniversary of The Toys That Made Us, Volk-Weiss spoke with ComicBook.com about the origins of the RoboForce toy line. He emphasized that the development was organic and not part of a master plan. It began when Michael Goodman reached out to him after watching The Toys That Made Us, proposing a collaboration to enhance both their careers by leveraging the Nacelle brand. This chance meeting eventually led to the acquisition of RoboForce rights.

Volk-Weiss explained, “Everything was organic. It wasn’t like Toys That Made Us came out, and then I’m sitting there three months later being like, now we can make toys. It wasn’t like that. What happened was, somebody else saw Toys That Made Us. That guy called me, his name’s Michael Goodman. He suggested we work together, and it was one of the few times taking a risk paid off. Because Toys That Made Us was so popular, Goodman could go to the owner of RoboForce and propose a deal. Without Toys That Made Us, these conversations wouldn’t have occurred, and I wouldn’t have met Michael Goodman.”

The newly animated RoboForce series is set in 2089. The latest version of Soraya Aviram’s RoboForce was introduced to assist a new intergalactic society on Earth. On the same day, rival Silas Duke unveiled his Utopia Aegis 101 line of bots, rendering RoboForce obsolete. After 15 years in menial jobs, a rogue code causes the Utopia Aegis 101s to turn against humanity, leaving Maxx 89 and RoboForce as the only hope to save the world.

The series will be executive produced by Brian Volk-Weiss, who also directs, along with Cisco Henson, Matt Kravitsky, Michael Goodman, Tom Stern, and Gavin Hignight for Nacelle. Additionally, Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Brian Gewirtz will serve as executive producers on behalf of Seven Bucks Productions.
