Brittney Griner Celebrates Third Gold Medal After Russia Arrest

PARIS — As the American flag ascended to the ceiling of the Bercy Arena and “The Star-Spangled Banner” began to play, Brittney Griner was overcome with emotion. Tears filled her eyes during the gold medal ceremony following Team USA’s narrow victory over France, 67-66.

This was Griner’s third time experiencing a gold medal ceremony, having previously celebrated with her teammates after wins in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and Tokyo in 2021. However, this occasion was uniquely poignant for her due to the challenges she faced in 2022 when she was imprisoned in Russia.

“My emotions are all over the place,” Griner expressed. “This means so much to me. My family didn’t think I would be here, like I’ve said before, and then to win gold for my country—representing my country that fought so hard for me to even stand here—it makes this gold medal incredibly special.”

Griner’s road to this celebration was not easy. She was released from captivity in December 2022 after spending ten months imprisoned. This summer marked her first trip abroad since her release, including an exhibition game in England and nearly three weeks in France.

“I had little moments here and there,” she reflected. “The first train ride was a bit challenging. The last time I was on a train overseas, it was a prison train, so that brought back rough memories. But my teammates were there for me, and having my family and my wife here provided a really strong support system.”

In the decisive match against France, Griner scored four points and secured two rebounds, contributing to her team’s victory. Despite the struggles she has faced, her focus on the game and her dedication to representing her country shone through.

Griner’s journey is emblematic of resilience and determination. Being able to compete on an international stage, wearing the colors of her nation, after all she has endured, emphasizes the importance of her achievement. She continues to inspire many not just through her athletic prowess, but also by sharing her personal story of survival and strength.

The medal ceremony culminated with Griner standing proudly with her teammates, holding the gold medal that symbolizes victory against all odds. For her, the medal is much more than a piece of metal; it represents her struggles, her recovery, and her commitment to her sport and country.

The joy of the moment was palpable, as players hugged one another and celebrated their success. The shared emotion and camaraderie among the team highlighted the journey they undertook together, further solidified by Griner’s presence.

As Griner moves forward, her story will inspire others to overcome their obstacles. Her experiences resonate deeply, reminding everyone that challenges can be surmounted with courage, support, and determination.
