Brooke Shields’ Daughters Shocked by Her Controversial Kissing Scene at Age 11

Brooke Shields’ daughters, Rowan and Grier, are grappling with their mother’s most famous movie, Pretty Baby, which showcased her in a controversial role. Grier, in particular, is tired of seeing the distressing clips on social media and prefers to view happier scenes.

The 1978 film centered around a pre-teen girl, portrayed by Brooke, who was coerced into becoming a sex worker at a New Orleans brothel where she was raised. The film included more uncomfortable moments, such as when she appeared completely nude and a scene where her virginity was auctioned.

Unlike Grier, Rowan was more understanding, thinking that a stage kiss was more make-believe than real. Brooke’s 29-year-old co-star, Keith Carradine, tried to convince her of this fact as well, saying their on-screen kiss wouldn’t count as a first kiss because it was just part of their job.

At the time, Brooke didn’t see an issue with this rationale and still believes Carradine had his own struggles with the scene. Interestingly, her daughters don’t intentionally avoid Pretty Baby; they simply prefer reality TV, animations, and their mother’s newer Netflix projects like Mother of the Bride.

Ironically, Brooke considers Pretty Baby one of the highlights of her career, describing it as a cinematic masterpiece. Although Pretty Baby received the Palm d’Or, her daughters haven’t warmed to it. Despite public criticism for her role as Violet, Brooke’s opinion on the film has remained steadfast.

The role in Pretty Baby led Brooke to more similar roles, almost typecasting her as an underage sex symbol in films like Blue Lagoon and Endless Love. At the age of 15, she faced backlash again for her Calvin Klein denim campaign, due to her suggestive pose and portrayal. Now, with Rowan and Grier off to college, she is adapting to life as an empty nester alongside her husband, producer and screenwriter Chris Henchy.
