Browns’ Watson Confident He’s Still Among NFL’s Elite QBs

BEREA, Ohio — Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson continues to express confidence in his abilities as one of the top passers in the NFL, despite facing numerous challenges on the field.

When asked if he still views himself among the league’s elite quarterbacks, Watson responded emphatically, “Of course. No doubt.”

This weekend’s season opener against the Dallas Cowboys will be particularly significant for Watson, marking his return after undergoing shoulder surgery last November that ended his previous season. Since joining the Browns in 2022, Watson has played in just 12 games due to a combination of injuries and a suspension. During that span, his performance has been tough, with a 41.9 QBR, ranking as the sixth lowest in the league.

Watson did not participate in any preseason games and was faced with restrictions in practice two weeks ago due to arm soreness, as reported by head coach Kevin Stefanski. However, Watson clarified that he felt capable of completing the practice and insisted there were “never been any limitations” regarding his throwing shoulder.

“I challenged myself to get back to this moment right now,” Watson said, reflecting on his recovery. “I wanted to make every throw in the spring.” He asserted that he accomplished that goal under the guidance of Dr. Neal ElAttrache, which allowed him to prepare for a successful summer and training camp dedicated to strengthening his shoulder.

Though Watson is set to take the field, he might be without critical protection. Starting left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr., who is returning to practice this week after a season-ending knee injury last November, has indicated he will not be starting against the Cowboys. In his stead, Jack Conklin, also recovering from a severe knee injury sustained in Week 1 last season, may take the left tackle position. This would mark Conklin’s first start at this role since his collegiate days at Michigan State in 2015.
