BTS’ RM Unveils Solo Documentary “RM: Right People, Wrong Place”

BTS’s RM will soon be the focus of a new solo documentary called RM: Right People, Wrong Place. Directed by Lee Seokjun, who also produced BTS bandmate J-Hope’s videos for “Arson” and “MORE,” the film promises to take viewers through RM’s journey across Seoul, Tokyo, and London. These cities serve as the backdrops where RM conceptualized the visuals for his albums, including concept photos and music videos, thereby offering an in-depth look into his creative vision.

The film is set to premiere at the 29th BUSAN International Film Festival (BIFF) during its “open cinema” section, scheduled to take place from Oct. 2-11. It will explore various artistic collaborations and display numerous settings to offer a glimpse into RM’s introspection and growth. This depiction will add depth to the labyrinthine exploration of his identity as both BTS’s leader and as Kim Namjoon, which is RM’s given name.

Produced by HYBE and distributed by CJ 4DPLEX, the documentary will take fans on a journey through the eight months leading up to RM’s military enlistment in November 2023. This period followed the release of his debut solo album, Indigo, in December 2022. It will also show RM working on his second solo album, Right Place, Wrong Person, released this summer. The film aims to spotlight RM’s journey of self-discovery as he channels his experiences and emotions into an album that showcases his distinctive sensibilities and beliefs through a candid portrayal of feeling like an outsider.

Right Place, Wrong Person made an impressive debut, topping the Billboard Top Rap Albums chart in June and achieving the No. 5 spot on the Billboard 200 album chart. Six tracks from the album also debuted in the top 10 of the Rap Digital Song Sales chart.

Though the exact screening date at BIFF has yet to be announced, the movie will make its debut in a “large-scale outdoor screening” at the Busan Cinema Center. This will be a historic moment, as it will be the first film focusing on a K-pop artist to be officially selected for the “Open Cinema” section of Asia’s largest film festival.

RM: Right People, Wrong Place is slated for a global theatrical release later this year.
