8/30: CBS News Weekender 45:32

A tragic bus accident in Mississippi has claimed the lives of seven individuals, including a 6-year-old boy and his 16-year-old sister. Additionally, dozens have been reported injured following the incident.

The crash occurred around 12:40 a.m. in Warren County, as confirmed by the Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP). Reports indicate that the bus was traveling westbound on Interstate 20 when it suddenly veered off the highway and flipped over. Investigators have yet to determine the exact cause behind the bus’s departure from the roadway.

Of the seven fatalities, six people were pronounced dead at the crash site, while one additional person succumbed to injuries at Merit Health Hospital in Vicksburg.

In total, thirty-seven passengers were transported to local hospitals in Vicksburg and Jackson, suffering from what were described as “unknown injuries.” Notably, the co-driver of the bus was unharmed and did not require medical attention.

While no specific details regarding the victims have been released, it was confirmed by Warren County coroner Doug Huskey that two of those deceased were siblings. The children, a 6-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl, were both from Guatemala and were identified by their mother. Huskey indicated that additional passengers on the bus were also nationals of the Central American country.

Authorities have confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in this tragic accident.

The investigation into the crash is currently being conducted by the Mississippi Highway Patrol alongside the Commercial Transportation Enforcement Division, as they seek to uncover the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking event.
