Candace Cameron Bure & Jodie Sweetin: The Highs and Lows of Their Relationship

There are plenty of “Full House” cast members who maintain close relationships, but the dynamic between Jodie Sweetin and Candace Cameron Bure is a bit more complicated. The two starred together as sisters Stephanie and DJ Tanner back in the ’80s and ’90s. Sweetin opened up about their relationship on an episode of the “How Rude, Tanneritos!” podcast.

Sweetin explained that the on-screen sibling connection they shared was very real. “Candace was the baby of her family and then there was me, so I was the annoying five-year younger sister,” Sweetin revealed. While she likely got on her co-star’s nerves, they shared good times. The television sisters appeared to maintain a positive relationship into adulthood, reuniting with their co-stars for the 2016 Netflix reboot “Fuller House”.

Sweetin emphasized their lasting bond with her castmates in a People interview alongside Bure and Andrea Barber. However, after “Fuller House” ended in 2020, the duo’s opposing political views and values led to a rift in their friendship. Since then, their relationship has seen several ups and downs.

Jodie Sweetin and Candace Cameron Bure’s feud can be traced back to Bure’s controversial departure from the Hallmark Channel in November 2022. Bure left the channel to join the Great American Family network, focusing on “faith programming” and “traditional marriage” storylines, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.

This appeared to hint at her displeasure with Hallmark’s efforts toward LGBTQIA+ inclusivity. JoJo Siwa, who had previously called out Bure for being rude, criticized her remarks on Instagram. Sweetin, an ally for the queer community, supported Siwa by commenting, “You know I love you.” She also shared resources from GLAAD, an LGBTQIA+ nonprofit, further solidifying the rift. Subsequently, Bure unfollowed Sweetin on Instagram.

The tension continued into 2023 when Sweetin’s movie “Craft Me a Romance” was picked up by the Great American Family channel. Sweetin expressed her disappointment, explaining she wasn’t involved in the sale. She assured that any future money made from the sale would be donated to LGBTQ+ organizations.

Sweetin’s statement wasn’t a direct diss to Bure, but it showed her disapproval for the company Bure is associated with. Bure headlines flicks for GAF and serves as the Chief Creative Officer of Great American Media. This incident underscored the stark differences between Sweetin and Bure.

Despite their differing values, Bure and Sweetin have publicly appeared at several ’90s-themed conventions together. They were joined by Andrea Barber and Dave Coulier at ’90s Con Hartford in March 2023. Bure documented the event on Instagram, noting that Sweetin was “en route” as they traveled.

Their dynamic during the con seemed civil but distant, with the two sitting on opposite ends of the couch during their group panel and opting not to take press and audience questions. The “Full House” stars also attended ’90s Con Tampa in September 2023, showcasing a cooperative but still tentative relationship.

In January 2024, Sweetin and Bure joined their “Full House” castmates to commemorate the two-year anniversary of Bob Saget’s death. John Stamos hosted an Instagram Live with appearances from actors like Dave Coulier, Andrea Barber, Sweetin, and Bure.

Bure and Sweetin shared their love for Saget and their experiences with grief. Despite their differences, they showed that they could come together to honor their late co-star. Bure expressed her love for her castmates before leaving the call, to which Sweetin responded warmly, indicating that their bond still exists, albeit strained.

Once again, Sweetin and Bure found themselves divided over the controversy surrounding the Paris Olympics opening ceremony in July 2024. Many Christians were outraged by a performance at the event, believing it mocked Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper.” Bure took to Instagram to condemn the display as blasphemous. The event’s director clarified that the performance was inspired by the Greek god Dionysus, not the religious scene.

Sweetin defended the tableau on her Instagram Story, pointing out its artistic and historical significance. She shared a video explaining the ceremony’s connection to the painting “The Feast of the Gods” by Jan van Bijlert. This episode highlighted the ongoing contrast between Sweetin and Bure’s viewpoints.
