In a major move for the Cleveland Cavaliers, free agent center Tristan Thompson has reached an agreement on a one-year contract to rejoin the team. A reliable source informed The Associated Press about the negotiations on Friday.

Thompson, who is 33 years old, made his return to the Cavaliers last season after a varied stint with teams like Boston, Sacramento, Indiana, Chicago, and the Los Angeles Lakers since 2020. During the past season, he participated in 49 games, putting up an average of 3.3 points and 3.6 rebounds per game.

The details of the deal were finalized on Friday by Thompson’s agent, Rich Paul, although the contract is still pending signature. Should everything proceed smoothly, this upcoming season will mark Thompson’s 11th year with the organization that originally drafted him.

Standing at 6-foot-10, Thompson may not replicate the level of productivity he demonstrated in his prime, but his leadership qualities are highly valued by the Cavaliers. This attribute is crucial for a team comprising many younger players.

Last season, Cleveland faced a tough battle against injuries but still managed to reach the second round of the playoffs. They were ultimately defeated in five games by the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference semifinals. The Celtics went on to clinch the championship.

Drafted by the Cavaliers in 2011 as the No. 4 overall pick, Thompson has played a significant role in the franchise’s success, including being part of the team that captured the NBA championship in 2016. His durability and experience have been instrumental in the Cavs’ journey over the years.

Throughout his career, Thompson has accumulated impressive statistics, averaging 8.7 points and 8.1 rebounds over the course of 779 games. His consistent performance and ability to contribute, even in a limited role, continue to be assets for Cleveland.

The Cavaliers are looking to build on last season’s playoff run and hope that Thompson’s presence will also enhance their locker room experience, fostering development among the younger players.

As the season looms ahead, fans eagerly anticipate Thompson’s impact on the court and within the team dynamics. With his seasoned experience and championship pedigree, the Cavaliers aim to leverage his skills as they prepare for the challenges of the upcoming season.
