The Falmouth Country Club greens are alive this weekend with the energy of celebrities and charity supporters, all gathered for the annual Drive Fore Kids golf tournament. This event brings together an impressive mix of sports legends, TV and film stars—33 in total—to raise crucial funds for two local pillars: the Barbara Bush Children’s Center and the Dempsey Center, both dedicated to supporting children and families facing cancer.
Charity and Competition for a Cause
Brian Corcoran, Director of Drive Fore Kids, stressed that the heart of the tournament goes well beyond just celebrity entertainment. “It’s about providing and making sure that the families who are in need get the care they need,” said Corcoran. The goal for 2025 is ambitious but meaningful: raising $200,000 to directly benefit the MaineHealth Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital and the Dempsey Center, ensuring that treatment, support, and hope are available to every Maine child and family fighting cancer, regardless of their ability to pay.
A Star-Studded Lineup Tees Off
The courses’ fairways this year feature an array of recognizable faces, among them Carly Chaikin, known for her role as Darlene in the acclaimed TV drama "Mr. Robot." Chaikin reflected on the experience, sharing, “It’s so much fun being with everybody and being here for an amazing cause.” She also emphasized how cancer’s impact on her family deepens her commitment to supporting affected children.
For many of the participants, the tournament strikes a personal chord. Jon Lester, three-time Major League Baseball champion and former Red Sox pitcher, is making his debut at the event. Lester highlighted the emotional significance of the event, noting, “Going through cancer in ‘06 and having treatments— I probably wouldn’t be here without the researchers and doctors.” Lester’s story is a potent reminder of the personal battles behind each act of charity.
Spotlight on Survivors and Support
Beyond the star golfers, the event also shines a light on children like McKenzie Barker, a young cancer survivor who received care at the Barbara Bush Children’s Center. McKenzie proudly joined celebrities on the course, swinging her clubs as her mother, Christie Betney, observed, “It’s given her a chance to be a normal kid again… They’ve done amazing work to help all of these kiddos in our great state of Maine.”
