Charli XCX’s Viral ‘Brat’ Post Endorses Kamala Harris, Gains Campaign Support

In a potential boost to her appeal among young voters, Kamala Harris’s campaign has embraced the support of singer Charli XCX, capitalizing on some longstanding memes about the vice president.

Just hours after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race and endorsed Harris for the Democratic nomination, Charli XCX posted on X, “kamala IS brat.” The post quickly garnered over 10 million views and roughly 200,000 likes.

The Harris campaign was quick to appreciate the singer’s endorsement, updating the profile picture on the Kamala HQ X feed to match the green background and letter style of Charli XCX’s “Brat” album cover.

With the release of Charli XCX’s “Brat” album on June 7, some fans have dubbed this the summer of Brat. In a TikTok video, the singer explained what she means by “brat”:

“You’re just like that girl who is a little messy and likes to party and maybe says some dumb things sometimes. Who feels herself but maybe also has a breakdown. But kind of like parties through it, is very honest, very blunt. A little bit volatile. Like does dumb things. But it’s brat. You’re brat. That’s brat.”

The viral association of Harris with the “Brat” album gained momentum on Sunday, with some fans creating videos that combined clips of Harris with songs from the album, along with remixes incorporating audio of Harris speaking.

Other memes about Harris from the past have also gained renewed attention, including references to a May 10, 2023 speech where she recalled her mother asking, “Do you think you just fell out of a coconut tree?”

While Republicans have used the clip to mock Harris, her supporters have embraced the quote. Colorado Governor Jared Polis showed his support for the party’s new frontrunner by posting emojis of a coconut, a palm tree, and an American flag.
