Cher Releasing Two-Part Memoir, Shares Details She Once Hid

Cher is unveiling her complete story through a two-part memoir series, with fresh details about the books’ content emerging recently. The legendary 78-year-old singer, often referred to as the Goddess of Pop, will introduce Cher: The Memoir, Part One on November 19, with the second part to be released a few months later.

Dey Street Books, an imprint of the William Morrow Group at HarperCollins Publishers, announced on Wednesday the plan for the two-part publication. The publisher also shared teasers hinting at what readers can expect. Cher has given some insights into the memoirs, revealing her own internal struggle about what to share and what to withhold.

July 24 marked the unveiling of the cover for Cher: The Memoir, Part One. It boasts a minimalist aesthetic, featuring a sideways black-and-white photo of a younger Cher, her eyes intensely rimmed with dark eyeliner, staring at the reader. According to the publisher, Cher’s life is too vast to be contained in just one book. The memoir will delve into various facets of her life, portraying her as “the daughter, the sister, the wife, the lover, the mother, and the superstar.”

In conjunction with the reveal, Cher shared the cover on her Instagram, garnering over 67,000 likes and numerous promises from fans to pre-order the book. However, Cher admitted on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that she was initially hesitant to share her story in this manner.

“I just totally chickened out,” she confessed. “I didn’t put in some things that need to be in, and they’re not comfortable. But they need to be put in, so I have to go back and man up.” She explained that her life experiences necessitate genuine, personal details, noting, “I’ve lived too long and done too much, and so it’s like it should be the encyclopedia.”

The forthcoming memoir promises to cover key moments from Cher’s life, both those that made headlines and those that remained private until now. The publisher teased, “After more than seventy years of fighting to live her life on her own terms, Cher finally reveals her true story in intimate detail, in a two-part memoir.” They added that the memoir, filled with Cher’s trademark honesty and humor, details how she became the trailblazing superstar that the world has admired for over half a century.

An insider told Closer Weekly that Cher revisited and added some details she had initially hesitated to include, which might disappoint certain people.

“She dives into her issues with [first husband] Sonny Bono,” the insider revealed. “She’ll also take a look at her early years and a childhood that was chaotic at best, with her difficult relationship with her mother.” The memoir will also touch on her relationship with her children, including 55-year-old Chaz and his transition, as well as her complicated relationship with 48-year-old Elijah Blue. Although Cher decided to include these sensitive details, the insider confirmed she still worries about the reaction they might provoke.

Despite her fears, Cher realized that if she was going to publish a memoir about her life, transparency was essential. “This is her story, and it’s the only one she knows,” the insider shared.
