Chiefs’ Butker Reacts to Serena Williams’ ESPY’s Diss

Serena Williams delivered a diss on Kansas City Chiefs’ kicker, Harrison Butker, during Thursday night’s ESPY’s award show. Now, after some time has passed, Butker finally responds to the comments made about him during the event.

Butker went viral earlier in the year after making some controversial comments at a graduation ceremony about women’s roles in society. During the ESPYs, Serena Williams, Venus Williams, and Quinta Brunson took a stab at Butker over those statements.

Venus Williams kicked it off by saying, “Go ahead and enjoy women’s sports like you would any other sports because they are sports.” After that, her sister Serena jumped in saying, “Except you, Harrison Butker. We don’t need you.” Then Brunson ended it with, “At all. Like ever.”

On Friday, Harrison Butker issued a statement regarding those comments, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. The Chiefs’ kicker started the statement off by congratulating Serena Williams for hosting the ESPYs. But then he shared how he really felt about the whole thing.

“I thought Mrs. Williams was a great host and applaud her for using her platform to express her beliefs on a variety of topics. Sports are supposed to be the great unifier and at an event dedicated to celebrating a diverse group of men and women who have accomplished great feats, she used it as an opportunity to disinvite those with whom she disagrees with from supporting fellow athletes.”

This might have been an opportunity for Harrison Butker to clarify his comments, or claim he was misunderstood earlier in May. Instead, the Chiefs’ kicker likely didn’t bring in any new fans after reacting to the diss he received at the ESPYs.

Harrison Butker first joined the Kansas City Chiefs in 2017 and has been their starting kicker ever since. Last season he converted 33 out of 35 field goal attempts while also going 100 percent in PATs.
