Chris Hemsworth Surprises Fans, Plays Drums at Ed Sheeran Concert

Chris Hemsworth, widely recognized for his role as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is set to voice the legendary Optimus Prime in the upcoming animated film, Transformers One. Hemsworth boasts an impressive portfolio with roles in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Extraction and its sequel, Ghostbusters (2016), and Men in Black: International, among other projects. He also leads the National Geographic reality docuseries, Limitless with Chris Hemsworth, which was renewed for a second season on Disney+ earlier this year. Recently, Hemsworth made a special appearance in Romania that left a memorable mark on thousands of fans.

This week, during an Ed Sheeran concert attended by a crowd of 70,000 at Romania’s National Arena, Hemsworth surprised everyone by playing the drums for Sheeran’s song “Thinking Out Loud.” Sheeran later shared the experience on Instagram with the caption, “Got @chrishemsworth to learn drums for my stadium show, find out why on his show #LimitlessWithChrisHemsworth Season 2 coming 2025 to @disneyplus #thorfortheencore #iwasworthy.” The unique collaboration between the actor and the musician added an unexpected thrill to the concert.

Transformers One, set on Cybertron, explores the untold origin story of young Optimus Prime and Megatron. Before becoming the leaders of the rival factions—the Autobots and Decepticons—they were known as Orion Pax (voiced by Hemsworth) and D-16 (voiced by Henry) and were comrades whose decisions significantly altered their planet’s fate. While working in waste management deep within Cybertron, Orion and D-16 cross paths with B-127 (Key), also known as Bumblebee, and Ariel (Scarlett Johansson), also known as Elita-1, leading them on a perilous journey to the surface of their world.

The film features a stellar voice cast including Jon Hamm (Mad Men) as Sentinel Prime, Steve Buscemi (Transformers: The Last Knight) in a yet-to-be-disclosed villain role, and Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix) as Alpha Trion, the guardian of Vector Sigma, Cybertron’s core mega-computer that grants Transformers their ability to transform. This fresh take on their origin story is brought to life by Paramount Animation (The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run), Hasbro Entertainment (Transformers: EarthSpark), and New Republic Pictures (The Tiger’s Apprentice).

Director Josh Cooley shared insights with ComicBook about this new chapter in the Transformers franchise. “We did our take on the origin, which is still staying true to the lore of Transformers,” Cooley mentioned, highlighting that Optimus Prime’s backstory depicted in this film is unprecedented on screen. He clarified that while this movie isn’t a direct prequel to any live-action films, it stands as a unique narrative on its own.

Fans can look forward to seeing Transformers One exclusively in theaters starting September 20th.
