Chris Hemsworth’s Hulk Hogan Biopic Scrapped

The long-awaited Hulk Hogan biopic, which was set to involve Todd Phillips and Chris Hemsworth, is officially canceled. Phillips himself disclosed this information during an interview focused on his latest project, Joker: Folie a Deux. When asked about the Hulk Hogan biopic, Phillips stated, “I love what we were trying to do, but that’s not going to come together for me.” This revelation indicates that the project, already shaky after Netflix’s departure, is now definitively shelved.

Hulk Hogan provided additional details about the biopic’s status during an interview with Chris Van Vliet on Insight. According to Hogan, Netflix’s involvement ended due to a business complication, prompting Hogan to pursue other opportunities. “It was a situation where business-wise, Netflix kind of missed the date as far as a business situation,” Hogan explained. “I had a choice at that time to switch gears. My life rights and stuff are somewhere else now, and there’s a lot of things that are getting ready to happen. Hopefully, [director] Todd Phillips and Chris Hemsworth will still want to play; there’s still a huge opportunity there.”

Reflecting on the project, Hogan mentioned, “Scott Silver wrote the script. He wrote the Joker and a bunch of other movies. Todd Phillips has done the Joker, Wolf Of Wall Street, all of the crazy stuff that he did. The script came back and it was amazing because my favorite movies are like Scarface, Godfather, True Romance. It was there. All of a sudden, there was a business glitch, and they tried to fix it a few days later, but I had already decided to move on.”

Despite this biopic’s cancellation, it’s not the only Hulk Hogan project currently in development. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s Artists Equity Production Company have acquired a screenplay titled Killing Gawker. This film would chronicle the real-life legal battle between Hogan and Gawker Media. The script is based on Ryan Holiday’s book, Conspiracy: Peter Thiel, Hulk Hogan, Gawker, and the Anatomy of Intrigue. Charles Randolph, noted for his Oscar-nominated work on The Big Short, is writing the script. However, no details about the release date or official casting have been released yet.

The film will delve into the courtroom drama from 2012, when Hogan sued Gawker Media for publishing a 2006 sex tape clip. Hogan sought $100 million in damages, citing invasion of privacy, infringement of personality rights, and emotional distress. In 2016, Gawker Media agreed to a $31 million settlement with Hogan. While the release date of this new Hogan project remains uncertain, it appears to be progressing smoothly.
