Cincinnati Bengals Expect Ja’Marr Chase to Play in Season Opener

CINCINNATI — The Bengals are cautiously optimistic about having one of their star receivers ready for the season opener this Sunday.

Sources indicate that the team is proceeding with the expectation that wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase will participate in the game against the New England Patriots. However, should circumstances prevent his playing, the Bengals are prepared to adjust their strategy accordingly.

Recently updated injury reports revealed that Chase was dealing with an illness. Earlier in the week, he was listed as limited in practice due to what was designated as rest. Notably, Chase did not participate in training camp due to a contract dispute, leading to speculation about his readiness for the season opener. After practicing fully on Friday, he referred to his status as a game-time decision.

The three-time Pro Bowler openly stated his willingness to play even without a contract extension. In his first comments since last season, Chase mentioned that discussions between the team and his camp were ongoing, though he acknowledged that the likelihood of a deal being finalized before Sunday was slim.

When discussing whether he would take the field, Chase emphasized that the ultimate decision lies with him. “It’s my decision,” he stated firmly during a session with the media.

However, the Bengals might still face challenges with their receiving corps. Another key receiver, Tee Higgins, is doubtful for the game due to a hamstring injury sustained during practice on Thursday. Coach Zac Taylor noted that Higgins was limited in that session and did not participate in Friday’s practice.

In light of these developments, Cincinnati has opted to elevate wide receiver Kendric Pryor to the active roster for the matchup against the Patriots at Paycor Stadium.

The team’s objective is to secure only its second victory in an opener during Zac Taylor’s tenure as head coach. The Bengals’ only previous opening win came in 2021 against the Minnesota Vikings.

As the kickoff approaches, all eyes will be on the health and readiness of both Chase and Higgins. The Bengals are hopeful for a strong start to the season, but their plans may hinge on the status of these dynamic receivers.
