Citadel Adds ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ Star to Season 2 Cast

Prime Video’s global spy franchise, Citadel, is expanding its team of agents. Reports confirmed that Matt Berry, known for his roles in What We Do in the Shadows and The IT Crowd, along with Gabriel Leone from Ferrari and Senna, have joined the cast for the second season. Their specific roles remain undisclosed for now.

Berry and Leone will join an already star-studded cast that includes Richard Madden, Priyanka Chopra-Jonas, Stanley Tucci, and Lesley Manville. Additionally, Midsommar actor Jack Reynor is also set to appear in the new season.

The second season of Citadel will see the return of the famed directing and producing duo, Joe and Anthony Russo. Despite their commitments to directing blockbuster films like Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars for Marvel Studios, the Russo brothers are heavily involved in this project.

Jennifer Salke, Amazon Studios chief, confirmed their involvement in an interview. “They’re definitely involved in the second season, directing and producing, and we are moving ahead and excited about that,” she said. Salke also mentioned the upcoming Italian spin-off, Citadel: Diana, describing it as thrilling and grounded.

Salke further highlighted that Honey Bunny, another related show from India, is being produced by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K., some of Amazon’s most successful creators. This prequel will delve deeper into the world of Citadel and will likely add another layer of complexity to the franchise.

Vernon Sanders from Amazon Studios chimed in, saying, “The Diana piece coming from Italy, Honey Bunny coming from India, each of them has some flavor that’s very specific to the region, but there is still global storytelling.” He also hinted at upcoming news regarding the main storyline and cast for the second season of Citadel, which is about to begin production soon.

The premise of Citadel is gripping. Eight years ago, Citadel, an independent global spy agency, fell at the hands of Manticore, a sinister syndicate. With Citadel’s demise, elite agents Mason Kane, played by Richard Madden, and Nadia Sinh, portrayed by Priyanka Chopra-Jonas, had their memories wiped as they narrowly escaped death. Since then, they have lived under new identities, unaware of their pasts.

However, their lives take a dramatic turn when Bernard Orlick, a former Citadel colleague played by Stanley Tucci, tracks Mason down. Orlick is in desperate need of help to prevent Manticore from establishing a new world order. Reluctantly, Mason seeks out his former partner, Nadia. Together, they embark on a high-stakes mission that spans the globe, aiming to thwart Manticore’s plans while dealing with their complex relationship built on secrets and lies.

The series also features Lesley Manville as Dahlia Archer, Osy Ikhile as Carter Spence, Ashleigh Cummings as Abby Conroy, Roland Moller as Anders Silje and Davik Silje, and Caoilinn Springall as Hendrix Conroy.

The upcoming second season of Citadel will be exclusively available on Prime Video at a later date.
