Colleen Hoover Books Becoming Movies: ‘Verity’, ‘Regretting You’, ‘It Ends With Us’

Colleen Hoover’s popular thriller Verity is set to become a feature film under the umbrella of Amazon MGM Studios. Additionally, another of her books, Regretting You , has been picked up for an indie adaptation, with stars already attached to the project.

It Ends With Us, starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, marks the beginning of Hoover’s extension into the film and television industry. With the adaptation currently showing in theaters, other works of hers are in various stages of production.

Verity

Hoover’s suspenseful romance novel Verity, published in December 2018, two years after It Ends With Us, is being adapted by Amazon MGM Studios. The adaptation news was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Hillary Seitz is writing the screenplay, with Nick Antosca and Alex Hedlund taking on the roles of producers for the film.

As of yet, there have been no cast announcements, and a director has not been named.

Verity revolves around Lowen Ashleigh, a writer who is experiencing a dry spell in her career. She is recruited to complete a successful series of novels by best-selling author Verity Crawford, who is left in a coma-like state following a car accident. Verity’s husband, Jeremy, approaches Lowen to finish Verity’s work. However, Lowen stumbles upon a sinister manuscript that makes her question whether Verity’s accident is a cover for more tragic events.

Regretting You

Published nearly a year after Verity in December 2019, Regretting You is being adapted into an indie film. Directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars), the screenplay is penned by Susan McMartin. The indie adaptation is being produced by Constantin Film, with Robert Kulzer, Brunson Green, and Anna Todd serving as producers.

This story focuses on Morgan Grant and her daughter Clara. Morgan had Clara at a young age, which meant that motherhood became a central part of her identity before she could pursue other dreams. The tension between Morgan and Clara escalates further when Morgan’s husband, and Clara’s father, dies in a tragic accident.

Allison Williams (Girls) will portray Morgan Grant, with McKenna Grace (Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire) cast as Clara. Dave Franco will step into the role of Jonah, Morgan’s love interest, following the death of her husband Chris.

It Ends With Us

It Ends With Us had a strong debut at the box office. Originally published in 2016 and optioned in 2019, the book has now been adapted into a film. Christy Hall wrote the screenplay, and Justin Baldoni directed the film while also starring as the antagonist, Ryle. Blake Lively starred as Lily Bloom and also functioned as an executive producer alongside Colleen Hoover.

The film focuses on Lily, who finds herself entwined in a cycle of domestic abuse with her husband, Ryle. As she grapples with her situation, her former lover, Atlas Corrigan, played by Brandon Sklenar, re-enters her life, further complicating her scenario.

Colleen Hoover’s transition from best-selling author to having multiple adaptations in development showcases her appeal in both the literary and cinematic worlds.
