Colman Domingo, John Legend, and Others Q&A at Sing Sing’s L.A. Opening Weekend

Emmy Award-winning actor Colman Domingo has been exceptionally active with an array of new projects. In 2023, he bid farewell to his role as Victor Strand, a character he adeptly portrayed throughout eight seasons of AMC’s “Fear the Walking Dead.” Following this, Domingo is set to captivate audiences in the new film “Sing Sing,” which premiered in the Special Presentations program at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.

“Sing Sing” is directed by Greg Kwedar, known for his work on “Transpecos.” Kwedar co-wrote the film with Clint Bentley, who previously worked on “Jockey.” The movie is inspired by the Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA) program at Sing Sing Maximum Security Prison. Kwedar derived the concept for the film after volunteering for the RTA program at Green Haven Correctional Facility. Bentley has also spent time volunteering as a teaching artist within the program.

The RTA initiative aims to transform the lives of incarcerated individuals by providing meaningful opportunities for personal growth, productive time use, and community building. Statistics from Sing Sing indicate that less than 3% of prisoners participating in RTA return to prison, showcasing the program’s profound impact.

The film’s narrative follows Divine G, a man imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. While serving his sentence, Divine G becomes involved in the RTA program. He, along with his fellow inmates, undertakes the task of staging “Breakin’ the Mummy’s Code,” an original production crafted by members of the program.

The cast of “Sing Sing” features Oscar nominees Colman Domingo and Paul Raci, along with several alumni from the RTA program. This blend of seasoned actors and real-life program participants adds authenticity to the film.

“Sing Sing” is scheduled for a limited theatrical release on July 12, with a wider release planned for August. On July 13, Domingo, the filmmakers, and the cast will attend the film’s opening weekend. A Q&A session moderated by award-winning singer, songwriter, and actor John Legend will highlight the event. This will take place at AMC Century City in Los Angeles, CA.

The film is praised for its accurate depiction of the RTA program and its significant impact on its participants. Those interested in supporting RTA can make tax-deductible donations through the RTA website.
