Coming to Netflix: August 2024 Releases

Netflix has an exciting array of offerings this August, as reported by What’s On Netflix. Starting this month, the streaming platform will host 13 shows from AMC. But that’s not all.

The Jeff Goldblum-led series "Kaos" will premiere on August 29. This mythological dark comedy, created by Charlie Covell for Netflix, follows three humans—Riddy (Aurora Perrineau), Ari (Leila Farzad), and Caneus (Misia Butler)—as they learn about their connection to each other and a long-standing ancient prophecy. Along the way, they must also deal with corrupt and arrogant gods from classical mythology. Goldblum describes his character Zeus to Tudum as "complicated and charismatic, not to mention cruel," and praises Covell’s writing as "spectacularly smart, surprising, unexpected, profound, and deeply moving." Janet McTeer, who plays Hera, Zeus’ wife, hopes Goldblum’s character becomes scarier the more viewers watch the series.

Why is a tracksuit-wearing Zeus so scary? He discovers a wrinkle on his forehead, becomes convinced his end is near, and starts getting paranoid. Prometheus (Stephen Dillane), once a friend, now a prisoner, is plotting revenge, which involves humans completely unaware they’ve become pawns in a celestial battle. Meanwhile, Zeus contends with his family, including his cunning wife Hera and defiant son Dionysus (Nabhaan Rizwan), as well as his complicated relationships with his brothers Hades (David Thewlis) and Poseidon (Cliff Curtis).

Another noteworthy addition is Lee Daniels’ "The Deliverance," a supernatural horror thriller written by David Coggeshall and Elijah Bynum. The movie stars Andra Day, Rob Morgan, Caleb McLaughlin, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Tasha Smith, Omar Epps, Mo’Nique, and Glenn Close. The film follows Ebony Jackson (Day), a struggling single mother with personal demons who moves into a new home for a fresh start. Strange occurrences in the house draw Child Protective Services’ attention, threatening to tear her family apart. The film is based on the true Latoya Ammons family possession case, also known as the 200 Demons House incident in Gary, Indiana, in 2011.

AMC has licensed 13 shows to Netflix starting August, including popular franchises like "The Walking Dead" and the Anne Rice Immortal Universe. The first season of "The Walking Dead – Daryl Dixon" follows Norman Reedus’ character as he washes ashore in France, where the zombie virus originated. He struggles to understand how and why he got there, embarking on a journey across a resilient but fractured French countryside. The second season will see the return of the original "The Walking Dead" character, Carol.

The streaming service will also offer all eight seasons of "Fear The Walking Dead," the second series in "The Walking Dead" franchise. The first three seasons serve as a prequel to the original series, focusing on a blended family at the beginning of the zombie apocalypse, with subsequent seasons running concurrently with "The Walking Dead."

The first season of "Interview With the Vampire" will also be hosted by Netflix. The series stars Jacob Anderson as Louis de Pointe du Lac and Sam Reid as Lestat de Lioncourt, tracing Louis’ past life and his complex relationship with Lestat. This is the first series set in Anne Rice’s Immortal Universe. The second series, "Mayfair Witches," based on Rice’s novel trilogy "Lives of the Mayfair Witches," stars Alexandra Daddario as neurosurgeon Dr. Rowan Fielding, who discovers she’s part of a powerful witch dynasty haunted by a sinister spirit. The complete three seasons of "A Discovery of Witches," based on Deborah Harkness’ "All Souls Trilogy," featuring Teresa Palmer and Matthew Goode, will also begin streaming in August.

The first two seasons of "Dark Winds," a psychological thriller set in the 1970s based on Tony Hillerman’s "Leaphorn & Chee" novel series, will also be available. The series follows Navajo Tribal Police Officers Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) and Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) in the American Southwest, with season one inspired by the 1978 novel "Listening Woman" and season two incorporating elements from the 1980 novel "People of Darkness."

Other available shows include "Gangs of London," a British series depicting rival gangs and criminal organizations, and the complete three seasons of "Into the Badlands," a high-octane sci-fi martial arts series set in a post-apocalyptic world. "Kevin Can F**k Himself" explores the life of unhappily married woman Allison McRoberts (Annie Murphy), struggling to redefine her life with her insensitive husband, Kevin (Eric Petersen).

Clive Owen stars as Sam Spade in "Monsieur Spade," set in 1963 South of France. Spade is disrupted from his peaceful retirement by rumors of an old adversary. Six nuns are brutally murdered, leading Spade to investigate, unearthing town secrets and new leads.

Also available are the complete four seasons of "Preacher," based on the Vertigo comic book series, following preacher Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper), who, grappling with a crisis of faith, gains extraordinary powers and embarks on a mission to find God, accompanied by his ex-girlfriend Tulip (Ruth Negga) and vampire friend Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun).

"That Dirty Black Bag," a Spaghetti Western series, follows bounty hunter Red Bill (Douglas Booth), known for placing his victims’ heads in dirty black bags. He eventually crosses paths with corrupt sheriff Arthur McCoy (Dominic Cooper), unveiling a tale of vendettas and bloody encounters.

Lastly, the first season of the supernatural horror drama anthology "The Terror" revolves around Captain Sir John Franklin’s Arctic expedition from 1845 to 1848. The series stars Jared Harris, Tobias Menzies, Paul Ready, and Ciarán Hinds.
