Commanders Place Marcus Mariota on IR and Sign Sam Hartman

In a recent development from Tampa, Florida, the Washington Commanders have placed quarterback Marcus Mariota on the injured reserve list. Mariota, who was expected to serve as the backup to Jayden Daniels, sustained a strained pectoral muscle during practice. This injury follows a previous groin issue that had already sidelined him for the last two preseason games.

With Mariota now on the injured list, the Commanders have promoted former Notre Dame quarterback Sam Hartman to the active roster. As a result, Jeff Driskel rises to the position of backup quarterback, slated to support Daniels as he prepares for his first start against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

The Commanders had signed Mariota to a one-year contract in March, considering his extensive experience from nine seasons in the league, where he made 74 starts. Mariota had also developed a rapport with Daniels, as both players share the distinction of being No. 2 overall draft picks and Heisman Trophy winners.

Driskel’s impressive performance during training camp secured him a spot on the Commanders’ 53-man roster. Like Daniels and Mariota, Driskel demonstrated considerable mobility and the ability to make plays outside the pocket.

Head Coach Dan Quinn remarked on Driskel’s progress, indicating that he has shown significant improvement since the spring workouts. This growth is attributed to Driskel’s increased confidence in the offensive scheme devised by coordinator Kliff Kingsbury.

Quinn noted, “He could really let it rip. I’ve known him for a long time; I know the competitor within him, but it’s his legs and athletic ability that truly set him apart.”

Hartman was initially signed by the Commanders as an undrafted free agent during the spring. Although he was released from the team on August 26, he quickly found a place on the practice squad the following day, allowing him another opportunity to showcase his skills.

This roster change marks a critical moment for the Commanders as they head into the new season, relying on a younger quarterback in Daniels while navigating the challenges posed by Mariota’s injury. The team’s coaching staff, along with its players, will look to harness their collective talent and experience as they prepare for the upcoming game.
