Cory Hardrict has brushed off critical reviews about his first Tyler Perry film, Divorce In Black.

The actor, who is newly divorced, defended the viral Amazon Prime film and its creator. Perry has faced significant backlash over the years for repeating similar storylines and incorporating unbelievable plot twists in his films.

Hardrict, who stars in the film alongside Meagan Good, was recently approached by TMZ for comments. Despite the movie receiving a rare 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Hardrict praised the movie and Tyler Perry, exclaiming it as the “number one movie in the world” and commended Perry for his support towards his actors.

“Yeah, listen, I’m in Mr. Tyler Perry’s Divorce in the Black. It’s the number one movie in the world. I’m excited, man,” Hardrict said. “Number one movie in the world right now! Listen, I’m excited.”

While Hardrict’s excitement may be slightly exaggerated, Divorce in Black is currently not even in the top five globally, although it holds the No. 1 spot on Prime Video at present.

According to Box Office, the No. 1 movie globally is Despicable Me 4. Addressing the film’s low rating among critics, Hardrict admitted he hasn’t followed the reviews closely but is delighted that people are watching the movie.

“I don’t know nothing about it. I didn’t see that,” he said of the low score. “I mean, the people love the movie and we do it for the people—that’s who I do it for. If the culture’s rocking with it, it’s all love. So it’s fine. But as long as the people see it, my neighborhood see it, South Side, Chicago, L.A. see it, everybody see it, then I’m happy, it’s all love.”

The Chi actor also spoke highly of Perry, mentioning that he is currently collaborating with him on another undisclosed film. “Shoutout Mr. Perry, I love Mr. Perry, though. That’s my guy. He takes care of his actors, it’s a loving set and we’re gonna do it again,” he expressed.

One of the most discussed critical reviews of Divorce In Black came from comedian and TV host Loni Love. In a social media post, Loni suggested that Perry should hire Black writers and directors to improve his films and make them award-worthy.

“He could improve the movies & make them award-worthy if he would stop trying to save money by doing the writing and directing himself,” she said.
