Costco has implemented a membership price increase, which took effect on Sunday, marking its first hike since 2017.

In July, the retailer announced its decision to raise the annual membership fees. For Gold Star memberships in the United States and Canada, the price will rise from $60 to $65.

Additionally, executive membership fees will increase from $120 to $130. The maximum annual 2% reward associated with the executive membership will also see a rise, going from $1,000 to $1,250.

These adjustments will affect around 52 million memberships, with more than half of them being executive memberships, according to the company.

Costco explained, “It has been more than seven years since Costco’s last general membership fee increase.” They noted that membership fees help cover costs, enabling Costco to maintain low prices. The company believes that a small rise in fees will allow them to offer even greater value to members.

Costco’s last membership fee increase occurred in 2017, when the retailer added $5 to the price of individual, business, and business add-on memberships in the U.S. and Canada, bringing those fees to $60. At the same time, the cost of executive memberships was increased from $110 to $120, impacting around 35 million members.

In its latest financial report, Costco shared that it achieved net sales of $210.55 billion for the first 44 weeks of 2024, reflecting a 6.9% increase from the previous year. The retailer boasts 882 warehouses across the U.S. and Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico, Japan, and several other countries.

Costco also operates e-commerce sites in countries including the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Korea, Taiwan, Japan, and Australia, expanding its reach in the digital marketplace.

The membership fee increases seem to be a strategic move to ensure continued value for members while also addressing rising costs. As the company continues to grow and evolve amid changing market conditions, maintaining membership satisfaction will likely remain a top priority.

The changes in membership fees are expected to benefit Costco in providing resources for better pricing on various products and services, ensuring that members feel they are getting their money’s worth. The retail giant is aware of the competitive landscape and aims to differentiate itself through value-driven membership offerings.

Overall, the adjustment in membership fees reflects Costco’s approach to balancing operational costs with value propositions to its members. As the retailer moves forward, it will be interesting to see how these changes impact member retention and satisfaction over time.
