Could ‘Conclave’ Finally Earn Ralph Fiennes an Oscar?

Conclave, directed by acclaimed German filmmaker Edward Berger, debuted to a warm reception at the Telluride Film Festival’s Herzog Theatre on Friday night. If initial reactions and industry buzz are any indication, Berger’s latest effort could make significant waves in this year’s Oscar race, which has so far been relatively underwhelming.

Adapted by Peter Straughan from Robert Harris’s 2016 novel, Conclave dives into the chaos following the sudden death of a pope and the intense succession process that ensues. The film is hard to pigeonhole, blending elements of a dramatic thriller with comedy and horror. It’s filled with unexpected twists that should remain unspoiled. Some have compared it to Dangerous Liaisons, while others see echoes of Yorgos Lanthimos’s distinctive style.

What stands out unequivocally is the film’s excellence across the board. The stellar veteran cast delivers extraordinary performances, led by Ralph Fiennes, who portrays a cardinal appointed as the dean of the conclave. Fiennes’s character grapples with a deep crisis of faith, and his performance is as nuanced and masterfully executed as any role he has undertaken in his illustrious career. Despite his remarkable body of work in films like Schindler’s List, The English Patient, and The Constant Gardener, Fiennes has yet to win an Oscar. This could be his moment.

The supporting cast is equally impressive. John Lithgow, Stanley Tucci, and Lucian Msamati shine as fellow cardinals sequestered within the Sistine Chapel for deliberations. Isabella Rossellini also stands out as a senior nun with a keen eye for everything happening around her. The ensemble’s chemistry brings an engaging dynamic to the film’s high-stress environment.

Visually, Conclave is a feast for the eyes. The production design by Suzie Davies and the cinematography by Stéphane Fontaine are both top-notch, creating a richly atmospheric and visually stunning backdrop. The film also features an unforgettable score by Volker Bertelmann, who previously won an Oscar for his work on All Quiet on the Western Front. Bertelmann’s music enhances the film’s tense and dramatic moments, making it all the more impactful.

Focus Features is set to release Conclave in select theaters on November 1, with plans to expand its availability. Given the likely awards season buzz, this strategy should heighten interest and viewership.
