‘Counting On’: Jinger Duggar Admits to Hoarding Food in Bathroom

Counting On alums Jeremy Vuolo and his wife, Jinger Duggar, recently opened up about their experiences growing up in a large family on their podcast. During their candid conversation, Jinger revealed that she learned about hoarding food at a young age due to the scarcity they faced. Read on to discover more about their insights.

Counting On fans might remember the Duggar family’s cheerful moments on TLC, but the show didn’t delve into the struggles of maintaining a household with 19 kids. While having a lot of siblings ensured there was always someone to play with or talk to, it also brought numerous challenges.

Jinger Duggar and her husband, Jeremy, do not have a large family like some of her siblings. Possibly, Jeremy couldn’t fathom managing so many children. Furthermore, Jinger, the author of Becoming Free Indeed, faced significant hardships during her childhood. She shared that they often didn’t know if there would be enough food for everyone.

The TLC show never depicted children stashing food in bathrooms to ensure they got their share. Jinger’s mother, Michelle Duggar, knew about this but tried to stop it. Understandably, Jinger found it disgusting.

Jinger explained that the family had three groups of kids: the older ones, including herself, the middle children, and the youngest siblings. All of them grew up in an ever-expanding household, a size quite unique to them.

Talking about their food situation, Jinger said:

I remember a few times when we were very young some of my siblings would take their food, take their plate of food… get ready for this, it’s disgusting… in the bathroom. They would carry it and put it on the bathroom counter. My mom would be like, ‘Don’t do that.’ They’re like, ‘They’re going to eat it.’ That’s literally what they thought, ‘I’m not going to be able to eat my food because somebody’s going to take it, and we might not have enough for seconds today.’

Discussing the bathroom situation, Jinger shared that it wasn’t easy waiting for hot water with so many people. Some of the houses they rented earlier didn’t have enough bathrooms to accommodate the large family.
