Country Star Criticizes ‘American Idol’ for Disregarding Her Talent

Country music star Mickey Guyton appeared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, where she answered calls from fans and shared candid thoughts about her past experience on American Idol. During the call-in segment, a fan asked Mickey about her audition process for the reality show, prompting a revealing response.

Mickey discussed her brief run on American Idol during the show’s Season 7, where David Cook emerged as the winner. After being asked, “What was your American Idol audition process?” Mickey clarified that she did audition but didn’t advance far. Andy Cohen, trying to lighten the moment, acknowledged he was surprised she didn’t make it. Mickey then responded, “I did not. They threw me away.”

Although Mickey made it through the initial audition rounds, she was cut before the live shows began, which featured the top 24 contestants. Season 7, which aired in 2008, had an impressive run with the finals drawing 97 million votes as David Cook defeated David Archuleta.

Reflecting on her journey since American Idol, Mickey shared that she has only spoken to one judge from her season, Randy Jackson. “He has been very lovely to me,” she said. As for the other judges, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell, Mickey mentioned that she doubts they remember her audition, although they are likely aware of her career progress.

Despite her early exit from American Idol, Mickey’s career has flourished. Seven years later, in 2015, Capitol released her debut single, “Better Than You Left Me”, which reached 34th on the US Country Airplay charts and earned her an ACM nomination.

Since then, Mickey has released a studio album, four EPs, and ten singles. Her debut album, Remember Her Name, peaked at 47th on the US Country charts. Her second album, House on Fire, is slated for release on September 27, 2024. Notably, three of her EPs also charted on the US Heatseekers charts.

Among her singles, “Better Than You Left Me,” “Heartbreak Song,” and “Black Like Me” have all made their mark on various charts. Additionally, her collaboration with Dean Brody, “Boys,” hit number one on the Canadian country charts and achieved gold certification.

Mickey’s reflections on her American Idol experience highlight her resilience and growth as an artist despite early setbacks. Her candidness during the interview paints a picture of an artist who took what could have been a stumbling block and turned it into a stepping stone for a successful career in country music.
