Crash in Tim Walz’s motorcade injures pool staffer with broken arm

One staff member of the traveling pool suffered a broken arm after a car crash involving Tim Walz’s motorcade on Monday.

A car crash involving several vehicles in vice presidential candidate Tim Walz’s motorcade occurred on Monday afternoon, resulting in one injury. The incident took place just prior to 1 PM local time as Walz was on his way to a Labor Day event in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

A staff member from the traveling press pool was in the press van and is believed to have sustained a broken arm. Other reporters in the van reported varying degrees of injury, such as scrapes, bruises, and one individual reported a bloody nose. Another staff member expressed concern over a possible concussion but chose to continue to the event, according to a report from the Associated Press.

Notably, Walz’s own vehicle was not involved in the crash. The press van was struck from behind, which caused it to collide with the car in front of it, as outlined in the pool report.

President Joe Biden reached out to Walz from Air Force One to check in on the situation following the crash. Kamala Harris also took a moment to connect with Walz as she departed from a Labor Day celebration in Detroit, Michigan.

This isn’t the first time the motorcade has faced incident this campaign season. Last week, there was a similar situation in Georgia when Savannah police officer David Bates, who was riding a motorcycle as part of the motorcade, crashed and sustained injuries that required hospitalization. He was reported to be in stable condition later in the week.

The Harris-Walz campaign is currently focused on garnering support from voters in key swing states during this Labor Day. At the Milwaukee celebration, Walz emphasized the importance of labor in the nation’s history, stating, “We know exactly who built this country. It was labor that built this country. When unions are strong, America is strong.”

Following the event in Milwaukee, Harris was scheduled to head to Pennsylvania, while her husband, Second Gentlemen Doug Emhoff, planned to make an appearance in Newport News, Virginia.

In contrast, Donald Trump’s campaign is holding a virtual Labor Day event aimed at engaging the United Auto Workers union, which has already endorsed Harris.

In addition, the Democratic National Committee has rolled out 19 digital billboards in critical swing states, including Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, for Labor Day. These billboards feature an image of Trump alongside the message, “Trump’s an anti-union scab!” in both English and Spanish.

The billboards serve as a tribute to UAW President Shawn Fain, who made headlines during his speech at the DNC convention in Chicago last month by wearing a shirt that read, “Trump is a scab. Vote Harris.”

Brad Woodhouse, a senior adviser to the DNC, mentioned, “We were really kind of channeling Shawn Fain with that choice.”

Currently, Harris holds a 3.2-point lead over Trump in the latest average of national polls, with a growing advantage in six essential swing states, including those she and her team are visiting this Labor Day weekend.
