Creator of Lil Jon’s Unexpected DMC Entrance Revealed

It was a quirky meme about the Democrats’ vice presidential hopeful, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, that turned into the convention’s most viral moment thus far. Walz fans online had changed a lyric to rapper Lil Jon’s classic tune, Get Low, from ‘To the window, to the wall,’ to ‘To the window, to the Walz.’

That put an idea in Ashley Spillane’s head. ‘When the memes started about “From the window to the Walz,” I reached out immediately,’ Spillane told DailyMail.com. Spillane was the head of Rock the Vote a decade ago and had partnered with the Georgia-born rapper then.

They had switched up the lyrics to Lil Jon’s ‘Turn Down For What’ to ‘Turn Out For What,’ and filmed a music video alongside actress and activist Sophia Bush—who’s at the convention in Chicago this week—and other politically active celebs. ‘Jon is such a special artist,’ said Spillane, who now runs a social impact consulting firm. ‘He’s really open to creative ideas, he’s willing to do things like change the lyrics.’

With very little time to plan, Spillane was able to touch base with Lil Jon’s publicist Tamar Juda to see if he was open to performing at the upcoming Democratic National Convention in Chicago. She also had to make sure a Lil Jon performance would be wanted.

The answer was yes. ‘It was a network of women who just get [expletive] done behind the scenes,’ Spillane said. ‘Colleen Loper at the White House loved the idea and connected us with Carla Frank on the campaign,’ she continued. ‘And they made it happen, we made it happen.’

The small group of women kept the plan quiet so that it would be a true surprise. ‘He didn’t go to sound check the other day,’ Spillane explained.

A number of DNC artists’ performances were tipped off because they came into the convention hall for a dress rehearsal earlier in the day. It was initially clear where Lil Jon would fit into the program, but then the Democrats decided to do a musical roll call vote.

The rapper would represent his home state of Georgia. ‘We didn’t know what part we were gonna end up doing so having it be Georgia roll call was very special,’ she said.

Spillane walked ahead of Lil Jon on the United Center floor. ‘Immediately when people saw him on TV, I had like 57 messages immediately saying, “This is you isn’t it?”‘ she said.

Lil Jon performed both Turn Down For What—and again changed the lyrics to ‘Turn Out for What.’ As for Get Low—he gave Democratic nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris, some love too. He replaced, ‘To the windows – the walls’ with ‘VP Harris – Governor Walz!’

Spillane’s quick thinking and proactive approach turned a viral meme into one of the most memorable moments of the convention, showcasing the power of creativity and quick decision-making in modern political campaigns.
