‘Cuckoo’ Clocks In Top 10; ‘Longlegs’ Thrives In Neon Scarefest – Specialty Box Office

Cuckoo is poised to open with a $3+ million box office, not quite on par with the debut of Longlegs which hit $22 million, but still a solid start for Neon’s Alpine-set horror film featuring Hunter Schafer and Dan Stevens.

R-rated Cuckoo, directed by Tilman Singer, opened in 1,503 theaters, securing a 9th place at the domestic box office. Schafer shines as Gretchen, a troubled 17-year-old who moves to the German Alps with her father and his new family after her mother dies. The resort owner, Herr König (played menacingly by Stevens), shows an odd interest in Gretchen’s mute half-sister. Meanwhile, Gretchen experiences eerie noises and bloody visions leading her to a shocking discovery.

Longlegs, directed by Osgood Perkins, continues to perform well, ranking 10th in its fifth week with an estimated $2 million from 1,310 screens, bringing its total to an impressive $71 million. It remains popular amidst a steady stream of new releases and blockbuster films.

Holdover films from major studios also performed admirably. Focus Features’ Didi and A24’s Sing Sing continue to draw crowds. Sean Wang’s Didi, a Sundance winner, expanded to 200 theaters in its third week, earning approximately $650k over the weekend for a total of $1.6 million. The film stars Izaac Wang and Joan Chen.

Greg Kewdar’s Sing Sing, featuring Colman Domingo, expanded to 39 screens, bringing in $227k over the weekend and an overall total of $822k in its fifth week. The film is rolling out slowly but steadily gaining traction.

Sony Pictures Classics’ Kneecap, directed by Rich Peppiatt, also maintained a strong presence. The pseudo-biopic about the Irish rap trio of the same name grossed $103.4k from 204 screens, reaching an estimated total of nearly $820k in its second week.

In its second weekend, Will Braden’s CatVideoFest 2024, released by Oscilloscope, earned $102k from 55 screens, achieving a cumulative total of $482k.

The new limited release Good One by Metrograph Pictures grossed $30k across three locations – the Metrograph and Film at Lincoln Center in New York, and the Landmark Sunset 5 in Los Angeles. The debut from director India Donaldson, starring newcomer Lily Collias, is receiving rave reviews and is expected to expand into major markets by early September.

Lastly, Rialto Pictures’ 50th anniversary re-release of Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation, now in 4K restoration, grossed an estimated $17k from 5 screens.
