D.L. Hughley Declines Shannon Sharpe’s ‘Club Shay Shay’: “It’s Too Messy”

D.L. Hughley recently shared his thoughts on the viral sensation Katt Williams caused earlier this year on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast. During an appearance on VladTV, Hughley disclosed that he would “never” join Sharpe on his show, believing that Sharpe seeks another “Katt Williams moment.”

“I think that, like any other endeavor, there are jealousies and idiosyncrasies,” Hughley said regarding the stories often shared on Club Shay Shay. “I don’t think that’s indicative of the experiences that most of us have. After the Katt Williams interview, he kept trying to replicate it. I understand it was a phenomenon, but now, it’s become something else.”

“For me, as a matter of principle, it is too messy,” Hughley continued. “I think that brook has run dry. But for me, it’s about all those people who wanted to go on there because of what happened on Undisputed. The way Skip treated him made a lot of Black people, including myself, want to support him.”

Hughley made it clear that he wouldn’t participate in Sharpe’s show to create another viral moment like Williams’. “For me, I would never do it. I was supposed to do it a long time ago, even before that incident. I’m glad he’s making money, but it’s just something I wouldn’t do. People can ask why I choose Vlad over him. It’s personal. [Sharpe] doesn’t need me anyway, and he was my favorite football player ever.”

Hughley was referring to Williams’ interview where he called out Cedric The Entertainer, Steve Harvey, Faizon Love, and others. That interview remains Sharpe’s most-watched episode ever.

Sharpe later revealed on an episode of his Nightcap podcast with Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson that the Williams interview was incredibly lucrative. “Everyone was talking about how much money I made from the Katt Williams interview; I just got the check,” Sharpe said. “I made more money from the Katt Williams interview alone than any year I played in the NFL.”

While Sharpe chose not to disclose the exact amount he earned from the interview, he hinted that it was around $6,000,000. “So whatever you think I made, 3x it. If you think I made half a million, 3x it. If you think a million, 3x it. If you think I made $2 million, 3x it.”
