Dan Fogler Joins Timothée Chalamet in Bob Dylan Biopic “A Complete Unknown”

Dan Fogler, known for his roles in Fantastic Beasts and Walking Dead, will play Albert Grossman, a significant figure in the folk and rock and roll scene, in the upcoming Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown. Recently, Fogler was also announced for a stage adaptation, The Boy Who Loved Batman, which is based on the memoirs of Batman producer Michael Uslan.

The movie, directed by James Mangold—renowned for his work on Ford v Ferrari—was co-written by Mangold and Jay Cocks. They drew inspiration from Elijah Wald’s 2015 book, Dylan Goes Electric!

A Complete Unknown focuses on Dylan’s transformative shift to electrically amplified music. Timothée Chalamet not only portrays Dylan but also serves as a producer for the film. Set against the vibrant New York music scene of the 1960s, the story captures 19-year-old Dylan’s journey from Minnesota to becoming an extraordinary folk singer and global sensation, climaxing with his 1965 performance at the Newport Folk Festival, where he debuted his revolutionary electric rock and roll sound.

During that era, Dylan was a leading figure in the American folk music revival and stunned fans by incorporating an electric guitar into his performances. His 1965 release “Like a Rolling Stone” became a landmark folk rock song. The Newport Folk Festival performance marked a turning point in his career, though it wasn’t without controversy as some audience members booed his new direction.

Mangold revealed that making this film has been a dream project for the past five years. He expressed immense excitement about depicting such a monumental period in music history.

“I am also profoundly grateful for the support of Bob Dylan and Jeff Rosen in helping Jay and me and the crew with their recollections, wisdom and access to their incredible archives,” Mangold said.

The film features numerous notable figures from the music industry and is set to release in theaters on December 25, 2024.

Additionally, on Valentine’s Day 2025, Fogler will be seen in a modern pop music retelling of Romeo and Juliet in the movie Verona’s Romeo & Juliet by Briarcliff Entertainment. The film stars Clara Rugaard and Jamie Ward, with Fogler, Rebel Wilson, Rupert Everett, Jason Isaacs, and Derek Jacobi among the supporting cast.
