Dan Stevens on the “Very Unusual” Marvel Series Legion, 5 Years Later

It’s safe to say that Legion remains one of the most unique and memorable explorations of the Marvel Universe to date. The FX series, created by Noah Hawley of Fargo fame, delved into the most peculiar and thought-provoking aspects of Marvel storytelling by following the life of schizophrenic mutant David Haller. Legion pushed the boundaries of weirdness, earning a special place in the hearts of many Marvel fans.

Believe it or not, Legion aired its final episode five years ago, on August 12, 2019. Since then, much has changed within Marvel, highlighted by recent projects like Deadpool & Wolverine. That film also pays homage to the entire Fox universe of Marvel characters, including Legion‘s David Haller.

This week, ComicBook caught up with Legion star Dan Stevens to discuss the new season of Solar Opposites, where he voices the lead character Korvo. When asked about Legion‘s legacy in light of Deadpool & Wolverine‘s release, Stevens reflected on his three-season journey as the face of the series.

“It definitely does [hold a place in my heart]. I think it really, to this day, does stand out as a very, very unusual, weird cousin of the Marvel universe. That similarly was playing on a number of different tropes. Every day was totally different, very challenging, but also, just as a performer, just incredibly expansive and a terrific cast. Getting to work with some really, really special actors and directors. We had Ana Lily Amirpour and the Daniels come and do episodes and that was just fantastic. But yeah, insofar as where it is now, I think Legion’s firmly in the TVA Void,” Stevens shared.

Stevens starred in all 27 episodes of Legion, which aired from 2017 to 2019. Earlier this year, while promoting Abigail, Stevens expressed how fond he still is of the character David Haller, emphasizing how he would love to reprise the role if given the opportunity.

“I love that character,” he said. “I loved doing that show, and it was such a creative team behind it. Yeah, I loved it, so if they bring it back, I’m here.”

With the X-Men properties now being integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the odds of seeing characters from Legion appear again in the franchise seem slim. However, the fact that we got three seasons of such a strange and bold series is undoubtedly a significant achievement.

In conclusion, Legion‘s legacy continues to stand out as an extraordinary and unconventional addition to the Marvel Universe. While the future of David Haller and other characters from the series remains uncertain, the show’s distinct style and bold narrative will always be cherished by its fans.
