‘Dancing With the Stars’ Winner Norm Hewitt Dies of Motor Neurone Disease at 55

The Dancing With the Stars family is mourning the loss of a beloved contestant. Norm Hewitt, a renowned rugby player and the winner of New Zealand’s first season of DWTS, has passed away at the age of 55.

Hewitt, who was a prominent member of New Zealand’s rugby team, the All Blacks, was diagnosed with motor neurone disease prior to his death. His family confirmed the news in a statement released to Stuff. Motor neurone disease, as defined by the NHS, is a fatal condition that impacts the brain and nerves, leading to progressive weakness and deterioration.

Hewitt’s family shared their grief through a heartfelt statement: "It is with great sadness that the death of Norm Hewitt is recorded today. Husband to Arlene, and father to his beloved children Elizabeth and Alexander, the former All Black and NZ Māori, Hurricanes and Wellington rugby captain passed away, in the company of his immediate family, in the early hours of this morning."

The family’s statement continued: "Norm had been diagnosed with motor neurone disease. Norm’s funeral arrangements are private and his family similarly ask for their privacy at this difficult time, so that they might properly grieve their husband, father, son, and brother."

In addition to his rugby career, Hewitt became a household name in New Zealand after winning the first season of Dancing With the Stars. He captured the hearts of viewers with his dance performances, partnered with professional dancer Carol-Ann Hickmore. Hickmore paid tribute to her former dance partner with an emotional Instagram post: "RIP my friend, the best time of my life was experienced with you and what a pleasure it was, great memories, Rest easy big guy."

Hewitt’s passing is felt deeply not only within the DWTS community but also in the world of rugby where he left an indelible mark. His dedication and passion for the sport, coupled with his charisma and talent on the dance floor, made him a cherished figure both on and off the field. His contributions to rugby and his memorable journey on Dancing With the Stars will be fondly remembered by fans and colleagues alike.
