A 21-year-old man has been arrested in Denmark for allegedly setting fire to a Jewish woman’s home in Copenhagen. The arson incident occurred on May 29, and the man now faces preliminary charges under Denmark’s terrorism laws, which could result in a life sentence.

Preliminary charges are an initial step in legal proceedings, allowing authorities to hold suspects while investigations continue. In Denmark, a life sentence typically translates to 16 years of imprisonment.

According to reports, the suspect, along with unidentified individuals, set fire to furniture on the woman’s balcony, causing the flames to spread. Fortunately, firefighters were able to extinguish the fire before it caused any injuries.

Details regarding both the suspect and the victim have been kept confidential due to a court order. During the court hearing, the man pleaded not guilty through his lawyer. Additional proceedings were held behind closed doors, limiting available information.

The Danish Security and Intelligence Service has indicated that the suspect has ties to Loyal to Familia, a gang that is predominantly composed of immigrants and was prohibited from operating in Denmark in 2021.

Finn Borch Andersen, head of the security agency, expressed alarm at the targeting of individuals based on their Jewish identity. He also highlighted the troubling connection between such incidents and the activities of the Loyal to Familia gang in terrorism-related cases.

This incident follows a series of arrests in Denmark and Germany in December concerning suspected members of Hamas, who were accused of planning attacks on Jewish communities across Europe. These arrests were announced separately by both countries.

In conjunction with the earlier arrests, Danish authorities stated that three additional individuals, linked to criminal gangs, were apprehended. They specifically mentioned Loyal to Familia, known for various crimes including violence, extortion, and drug trafficking in Copenhagen.

When addressing the recent arrest, Borch Andersen cautioned that it is premature to determine whether this is an isolated incident or indicative of a broader trend regarding threats of terrorism.

The Jewish Community in Denmark has voiced its concern, labeling the fire as a “terrifying” attack, even though there were no physical injuries involved. This sentiment reflects the broader fears stemming from rising anti-Semitic tensions.

Borch Andersen further underscored that the security agency has identified an “intensified terrorist threat” directed at Jewish and Israeli targets within Denmark, particularly in the context of ongoing conflicts in regions such as Israel and Gaza.
