Danny Dyer has confessed to putting his wife through years of turmoil during their relationship.

The 46-year-old actor began dating Joanne Mas when they were both 13 years old and attending school together. Despite enduring multiple breakups and infidelity accusations, they married in 2016 after Mas proposed the previous year.

Dyer, who shares three children with Mas – Love Island star Dani, 27, Sunnie, 17, and nine-year-old Arty – acknowledged that his treatment of Mas hasn’t always been exemplary. In a conversation with Elizabeth Day on the How to Fail podcast, he shared that Mas has supported him through numerous challenges.

“Well, I’ve been with the same woman since I was 13. It’s a journey,” Dyer said. “It’s so rare, that.”

Dyer continued, emphasizing the rarity and complexity of growing with someone from adolescence into adulthood, especially under the public scrutiny that fame brings. He noted that Mas never sought fame but supported him throughout his journey from their mutual background on a council estate.

The EastEnders star admitted his wife’s life wasn’t what she signed up for, but she helped him navigate the complexities of celebrity life regardless.

“Fame really messed with my head,” Dyer said. “I didn’t know how to handle it, and she stood by me through a lot of nonsense and had to be very patient.”

He reflected on the commitment of marriage vows, noting that it’s challenging to maintain a long-term relationship amidst media attention and his own erratic behavior over the years. “I lost the plot for many years, and she had to endure all that publicly. I love her with all my heart. She challenges me every day and keeps me grounded.”

Dyer recounted a moment when Mas attended one of his plays, providing a much-needed dose of reality. “She came to watch me in a play once and told me, ‘Don’t get carried away with yourself.’ That’s exactly what I needed to hear.”

Previously, Dyer admitted he was apprehensive when Mas first asked him out, fearing it might be a prank. “I was the trampy kid, and she was the coolest kid,” he recalled.

“I had nothing going for me, and I thought it was going to be like Carrie – she’d set me up in a sports hall and dump pig’s blood on me. But no, she took me to Pizza Hut. It was amazing.”
